Glad to hear you liked this video! Thank you. A 191U, from Japan. Nice machines! Like the 191K, the 191U also has a different position for the needle (and threading through the needle) as my French 191b. Be aware of that! I have multiple (short) videos on threading a 191b, winding a bobbin and cleaning and oiling your Singer 191. Maybe that helps too. Take care and enjoy your machine!!! Erik

I enjoy watching your vintage sewing machine videos, specially anything about Singer 191J :D In the Philippines my vintage treadle Singer 191J is known as "de padyak" (the act of stamping one's feet on the treadle). Also since the insertion of the thread to the needle is from right to left it is known as "saliwa" (reverse)

Hello Erik! Thank you for the video, super instructive! We inherited one from my grandma and are trying to get it to work. We have the needle in (top and bottom) but the needle does not go down and up when we press the pedal. Any tips on getting it to work? Thank you!!
@erikneek
@erikneek Жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa. I'm so sorry for your loss. Your question: Why the needle does not move. The most obvious reason (in my opinion) is the plate on the rear. On the balance wheel (on the rear) there is a round plate. You can loosen that plate in order to wind a bobbin without the needle moving. It that plate tight? It it is loose, turn in to your right. (3'03" in the video.) The second reason I can think of has to do with the same plate. The washer inside can be mounted incorrectly. It's a simple task to refit it. Let me know if the knob on the rear was the solution or not. Good luck!

Heartfelt thanks. I blindly bougth such a machine yesterday at a garage sale, and now, thanks to this video (and a little testing,) I feel confident in using it for good and long service. It feels great. I still wonder though: Is there any special manipulation necessary to tilt back the machine in order to access its underneath? After having removed the stop on the right of my machine, I can only tilt it a little, but not "lay it on its side" as you do at 6:50, as is necessary to clean and lubricate the underneath parts.
@simonguitton
@simonguitton Жыл бұрын
Problem solved, I only had to apply more force than I thought reasonable, in order to overcome a resistance in the hinge that was probably due to age. Now that I've managed to tilt it once, it tilts without any difficulty.

Thank you so much for your message. I'm SO GLAD I was able to help you with your 191!!! I LOVE the look and feel of the 191. It isn't a 201, but it's still a very good and capable machine. Do you have a 191 with a hand crank or an external motor? When I lay it on its side, I tilt it well over 45 degrees, even close to 90, BUT I have something beneath the machine holding its weight, to prevent it tipping over (because of the weight). In every industry there is a 'magic' ... thing. In tv and video you have the Nichiban gaffer tape. When it comes to sewing machines: sewing machine oil (SMO). Apply SMO to get a stuck machine moving again, and/or to clean the inside AND the outside. But also to apply SMO to the hinges. It does the trick every time 🙂 Take case and enjoy you 191!
@simonguitton
@simonguitton Жыл бұрын
@@erikneek Mine has an external motor, no hand crank. Underneath my machine is a metal device that holds it from tilting over 45° and allows it to rest so tilted. I can "deactivate" it to tilt the machine completely. I won't fail to clean and lubricate the machine as it needs. I know that, just like for a bike and such mechanical devices, this is the condition for it's working smoothly, perfectly long. The little testing I did made me wonder at the hemmer foot that came with the machine; and seeing your stitching through leather with this machine let's me expect great service from it.
@erikneek
@erikneek Жыл бұрын
@@simonguitton Nice, a motorized 191! The system that allows you tilting the machine looks/sounds to me like the same mechanisme as being used in the Singer 206 and 306. Great to have that on your machine. Although a 191 is a strong machine, if you want to use real heavy materials (like thick leather), you might want to keep your eyes open for an old industrial Singer. But if you do normal stuff the 191 will be a great machine.

@erikneek Жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, Thank you for leaving a message. The little bar INSIDE the tension unit can wear out, so in worst case scenario you can replace the unit or that little bar. Personally I would start by disassemble the upper tension unit (piece by piece) and clean the discs first. Then put it back together and try again. Start by doing that. If that doesn't work you might want to order a tension unit online and replace yours. Good luck, Erik

@@luv2bjustme392 Most vintage sewing machines bulbs have a bayonet connection, you know... with the 2 dots on it. Those are the ba15 type bulbs. I did a video on replacing those bulbs in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fquVd3mJjMSHbK8 Make shure you have the correct voltage (220v or 110v). The LED bulbs have a MUCH lower power consumption (so a couple of watts apposed to the 15w on the older bulbs). The LED bulbs don't get hot! Real bonus! My advise is to buy a daylight balanced bulb (around 5500 Kelvin). ((Note that some manufacturers make the bulbs in different ways, so you might have the luck they fit, or bad luck they wont fit.)) Those machines don't even look the same 🙂 Different factories had different manufacturing processes. When I do have a 191k I will certainly make that video, especially for you! ;-) Take care.

July 8, 2023 1:35 pm CST (Nashville, TN) Hi there! I have a Singer 191U. The upper thread is not catching and pulling up the thread in the bobbin. -The needle is in with the flat side on the right. I threaded the needle from left to right (like I have since I was 5 years old. I’m 59 now). -The bobbin is put in correctly. -The release knob (that stops the needle motion when threading a bobbin) is tight. -The needle does go up and down, but is not grabbing the bobbin thread. Any ideas what’s wrong? Thank you! I enjoy your videos. I’ll keep watching. Hoping to find the solution.

@erikneek 9 ай бұрын
Hi Cecilia. Glad to agree: the 191 is a great machine. For some the hand crank is ideal because you can apply more force to the needle, compared to the bolt on motors. But I like to have both hands near my project, and that is impossible when you have a hand crank. There are a lot of manufacturers of bolt on motors. I have a (new) YDK-motor on my 201 mark2 and it works like a dream. Doesn't costs much... 35 or 40 dollars or so. Be sure you buy the motor with the right voltage for you area. Good luck!

@erikneek
@erikneek 8 ай бұрын
Hi! These are domestic machines, made for fabrics (at home). Yes, a manual domestic Singer CAN sew through thick materials but it is not made to do that. You can damage your machine. For leather you need a machine which is made to sew through leather, so it needs power. You might want to search for a (vintage) industrial machine with an external motor under the table. Depending on the type of project you might want a walking foot or rolling foot/wheel. There are A LOT of vintage Singer industrial machines on the market. Such as the Singer 31. Correct, that one was made for fabrics but it can handle leather without any problems. Hope that answers your question -- Good luck!

Hi Richard. Thank you for your message. I can think of 2 reasons this happens. [1] There is too much friction inside the machine. Solution: you might want to oil your 191. (Especially the rear/ oiling points near and on the balance wheel.) [2] The washer INSIDE the decouple plate is not put together the right way. It is a possibility... What you can do: Unscrew the little screw in the plate and then undo/unscrew that plate from your 191. Inside there is a washer with 2 of 3 pins. Turn it around and put it all back together. Test if it works. If not: Do it all over again until it works again. There should be a video on YT on this matter. It is not a big task and you cannot destroy your machine, so don't worry! Hi Eliane. Thank you for your message. The C after the model number indicates the machine was built in Campinas, Brazil. So yes, a 15C is a Brazilian model 15. But the model 191 is not the same as a model 15. The 15 and 191 both have a horizontal placed oscillating mechanism. So that's similar. But the 191 is NOT the same as a model 15 for multiple reasons. For one, (the most notable): the tension assembly on a model 15 is on the faceplate, always. The 191 has it right in front of you, on the cast iron. So the 15 and 191 are not the same, but they both sew perfectly. Enjoy your Singer and take care!

@@erikneekIt is May 2nd, 2024 and only now I see your reply. I didn't know the C is for Campinas. Many thanks for the information. How do you know?

Hi again@@vaccavo. Singer had a system: The letter after the MODEL number tells you where the sewing machine was built. The letter J stands for Canada, the K for Kilbowie Scotland and the - for Elisabethport NJ (USA). And the C for Brazil. I have a separate video about this subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4LIgH-rltOBqrssi=BHPuWbR0pLjUyFvj Take care and have a wonderful day!

Hi. Thank you for your message. Have you tried replacing the thread for another thread? Does is also break with this other (new) thread?

This looks like a modernized class 15 machine.

Hi Roland. You're not the only one. Some say it is a more modern class 15. But although it looks mechanically a lot like the class 15, the tension unit is not on the faceplate. ALL Singer class 15 models have the tension unit on the faceplate. So that's a big difference. Take care!

The tensioner on faceplate is the only thing I don't like about the 15, so maybe I shoud get at 191! Max needle size 18 or 21 like the 15? THANKS! @@erikneek
