This Singer 201 has that perfect contrasting color combination of chocolate and tan. Beautiful machine! I assume this one predates the standard black Singer 201-2, which is one of my favorite machines thanks to you and your impeccable restoration abilities.

Hi and thanks for your (as always) kind words in regards to our restoration project. Much appreciate it ! This 201 was made in UK in 1958 and was cast from light alloy which usually refered as aluminum since this is the dominant material in this. This model is quite often refereed to as the 201 mk2 which comes from "Make 2". Makes were used to differentiate same models. Mostly used in US Army weapons and ammo. So what this indicates here is a next generation 201. The 201 mk1 was made from cast iron. Started production in 1930s and stopped in the late 1940s early 1950s. WW2 makes this somewhat confusing since SINGER production of machines almost went down to zero to help the war machine in both US and UK. After the WW2 there was an abundance of aluminum (a relatively new and expensive material before 1940s) and light alloys in affordable prices. Since aluminum was easier to cast and machine plus made everything lighter, this was a no brainer. Production shifted to the new light materials, new shapes and of course color, many colors. The once only black sewing machines, now were coming in staggering coloration to fit everybody's taste. The 201-2 with the "potted" motor was only made in the first generation of 201s. So they predate the beige ones. Though 201-2 shape is more elegant and shows signs of better design and manufacturing she's quite older that her later sisters in beige/tan. But isn't this the case with all vintage items? Isn't this why we look back in such awe and isn't this why we search for the old instead of looking for the new? Well at least thats why we do it :-)
