My collection of the iconic Vintage Singer 201k Sewing Machine. I am a vintage sewing machine collector. I also restore vintage sewing machines. Vintage sewing machine restoration is a passion of mine. While it does take away from dressmaking time - it gives me so much joy.

Wonderful Hila! Yesterday I bought a 201 serial number started with E. I immediately dropped it at my local sewing repair place; an old guy known for expertise with older sewing machines. I wish I had your courage to take things apart and restore! Mine was advertised in local a neighbor app. The gentleman’s mother had owned and She died in 67. The machine is in beautiful shape but has not been serviced since she died! It has a knee lift for the presser foot and feed dog can be released for darning and embroidery. Fascinating!! It’ll be ready next week he says.

I have my mom's 1952 Singer 201. When I looked up the serial number it didn't have a K or anything. She sewed on it constantly and when her eyesight got so bad that it wasn't safe for her she stopped but she was in her 90s by then (she passed a month after her 100th birthday). She would tell me that she "wore it out". I had been storing it in the garage but yesterday I had my son who is staying with me help get it out and clean it off to bring inside. It came in one of those heavy utilitarian wooden cabinets with a bench seat. I cleaned, greased and oiled the head and now she sews just like a dream! The stitches are beautiul - even though the stittch lengths arre rubbed off the machine. The presser foot has seen better days, so I think I'll replace it and the throat plate doesn't have markings for seam sizes so I may get a new one or just put down some tape. I hope to sew some beautiful scrappy quilts one her. Mom would be so glad I finally gave her new life! I came back to list my collection: Singer Treadle 115/1921 (in cabinet) Singer Red Eye 66-1/1921 (in bentwood case) Singer 201/1952 (in cabinet) Singer 221-1/1947 Singer 221/1968 Singer 6268/1970s Bernina 830 Record/1980s I also have a little Singer hand crank that cuts pinked edges. Maybe for cutting wool strips for rugs? It's really old. It's for looks. I also have a collection of new and newish modern computerized and manual sewing machines. Right now I'm in love with my Juki TL 2010Q.

I am another collector in Australia. I have an eclectic collection. 2 Featherweights. 1 knee operated 201k. 1 hand operated 201k. 1 Husqvarna treadle with a fascinating history. 1 Singer treadle with the 6 drawer cabinet. 1 Elna SU.. 1 green Elna Supermatic. 1 Pfaff Expression and a Husqvarna Designer 1. I am searching for a Bernina Record. I feel I can’t pass up a good quality vintage machine because it’s impossible to buy this quality of workmanship today. Using plastic is ok.. just keep the original for historical purposes. I love the 201. Thanks for your video. I feel so much better about my collection.

Love today's post. I have a 201k 1946. When I removed the tension disk to clean I photographed the assembly order in detail so I have a permanent record. My stitch regulator numbers where very dim. Brush on acrylic paint rub off excess, let dry and keep repeating until the grooves are filled in. Good as new. Singer/Griest Buttonhole attachment either with templates or without produce beautiful buttonholes.

Brilliant work! I've just restored an industrial walking foot Singer 111G156, which was very rusty, I love that you have saved these machines and for virtually no money compared to their true value in today's money of over £1000 each. They were the best home machine Singer ever made! Well done to you.

Im so jealous. In US the 201’s are all with a potted motor. I want one i can treadle. I have 2 201’s. But one is actually a 1200 which is a 201 mounted in a tailors table. They are amazing solid and smooth machines. I have too many old machines. But i love restoring them like you do. Your joy working with them is evident. 😊 oh and Singer made a button hole attachment for the old straight stitch machines. They are plentiful and often come in the drawers of old machines. They made a zig zag attachment as well. It worked by shifting the fabric back and forth rather than the needle.

Beautiful machines! I love the vintage Singers, there is nothing today that compares to the quality. I have have one 99 that has no reverse and another that has reverse, but it is a Universal, they both were seized up and I took then apart, cleaned and oiled them. They are both working.. My other vintage Singer is a 401 heavy duty that I use for heavier weight fabrics, but it will sew any weight beautifully. I bought it off eBay for $100, a steal. The others were my grandmother’s. I also have a vintage Phaff that I use, but my main machine is a new Singer Professional. I am obsessed with sewing machines. Sorry so long. Thanks for sharing your machines.

Well, I’ll guess 25. 11 was my top at my collection, which is now down to 6. Congrats on the 201s. It’s one I did get rid of, to a good cause, but they are literally indestructible. It’s a beautiful machine! Thank you for rescuing it. ❤️. I am a total geek seeing your machines, thanks!!!!!!!!! 1 1952 Pfaff, 2 1962 Elna SU (rotary hook!), 1 1955 Singer 221, newer is a Brother serger, (gave away my vintage White 234) , and a ‘new’ to me Viking Designer SE. so I’ve done pretty good at retaining the old, interesting, sew anything machines while keeping fairly up to date (newest sewing is 15 year old Viking ). Picking them up for little money is the fun part, and then restoring them. Loved, loved it, can’t wait for more.

Hi Hila, I very much enjoyed seeing your collection of vintage sewing machines. I am also addicted to collecting them but don't have any as old as yours. I currently have 9, including my mom's feather weight which I inherited. My latest is a 201, love the stitch and have been using it exclusively for top stitching. Hi Hila, love what you did with your machines, what a feeling of accomplishment. I was in The Habitat Restore and bought a Remington for $30.00 it did sew a very nice stitch. When I looked underneath and in the bobbin case there was so much dust and debris in the feed dogs I was surprised how it managed to do such a beautiful stitch. I cleaned it up and oiled it really well. The needle tension is on the left side and while threading it up the little fine wire hook the thread goes through before it comes to the front broke. Not sure what it’s called but I need to replace it. I think you probably have at least 10 machines. Enjoy the process of the machines, so satisfying when you’re finished. I really enjoyed this video thank you so much for sharing. Val 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️

Hi hila, love your vlogs. Last week i gave £70 to my sister inlaw to buy a singer threadle sewing machine in south Asia. In many developing countries singer treadle sewing machine are still sold brand new. My sister inlaw bought the machine and it's a sphinx design. Living the old singer sewing machine dream through her as i have no room for a sewing machine with a table. Love watching old singer machine being repaired. Please can you show how you wind the bobbin on your third machine and how it sews in a tutorial. Many thanks ❤.

Have a collection of singers 201k, 401a, 401g and 3 treadle machines. Just recently bought a Elna SU 62c which I have to stop buying any more. It is such an addiction. Forgot I have 3 Victor machines as well. I am restricting myself to attachments and cams. Always look in charity shops for these. You should try to get a singer buttonhole attachment they make beautiful buttonholes on on the singer 201k. Great collection you have. Look forward to seeing your other machines.

Wow wow wow hila now you got me toooo excited may i ask if you could do tutorials on all your sewing machines on how they sew, also love to hear the sound of the machines. The singer sewing machines in Asia have changed, now you have a choice of wood or mdf table. The oil collecter that is on the table under the machine is plastic also the the drawer that comes with the table is plastic. The cover for the machine is plastic. The leather belt that goes around the threadle wheel and sewing machine wheel is a cotton rope. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 once upon a time it was all wood or metal. They are now all reproduction from China. Vintage is the real deal.

Good job! I just finished a singer 99k with the same flaking lacquer problem. The trick is to use a rag dipped in lacquer thinner. The lacquer thinner will re-constitute (re-melt) the old finish and feather out your edges. Then just re-coat with a few clear lacquer top coats. Also, you could have saved a lot of time by just applying new decals. I got them on ebay from Keeler Sales.

I love old machines as well, I only have 2 - a Featherweight and a 128- both 1937, but I’m watching for a 201 or a 66, preferably a hand rank. Ssssh! though Hubby thinks I’m done bwahahaha! because I have 4 machines (also have a new Viking and my old Betty from 1981, she’s a White). He thinks I have too much fabric, just to give you idea how silly he is. PS: I saw at least 10...you mad woman :)

I did exactly that was my 201 that I paid six bucks at a thrift store for. I stripped it I repainted it black I ordered the decals, the original singer ones, and it came out gorgeous. When I bought it it was completely seized up so I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it and then when I put it back together it worked but the timing was completely off. So I ended up having to pay a man $150 to completely redo it. The paint job was taking too long to cure so there are some indents in it, and, little bit of the sides chipped off when the man repaired it but it’s wonderful now. Then I got the Egyptian decal singer unless that together stripped it re-painted it red with his beautiful gold singer decals. And that one works perfect.

I’ve got a Bernina 730 record. It dates from 1971. When I sent it off to be serviced as it had seized the guy couldn’t repair it properly and now it only sews a straight stitch, originally it did zigzags, buttonholes and 20 embroidery type stitches. I wish I had the knowledge to sort it out myself, it was such a lovely machine. My Mum had a hand operated Harris K that was a different type similar to the Singer but it had a long thin bobbin. We used to sew so many things on that! You are clever to be able to repair your machines, I expect you’ve got about 10, am I right?

You can do buttonholes on these Singer's.With a buttonhole attachment. I have several (also several vintage Singers sewing machines, like an 201K, and 15-88). I like the buttonhole attachment that use templates (I usually use the 1/2 inch template). These attachments move the fabric, as the needle can't be moved.

Hi Hila. My 201k treadle machine (which was originally my grandmothers) and is my pride and joy, has gone very stiff. Typically halfway through a sewing project. I’m not sure what has caused this seizure, I’ve oiled but can’t seem to located the area that is causing the stiffness. Do you have any suggestions on where to start fault finding and taking apart. Thanks Jen

Hi Hila. I love your vintage machines. I have restored several Singer treadle machines in the 1980s. I restored a Jones treadle that I purchased for £50 that had rusted. I found that machine oil cleans the exteriors and brings back the shine gently. I haven't heard if the rust remover before. Can you let me know what it's called and where you purchased It? I used vinegar to clean off the rust soaking it and using wire wool daily to get it off the. I have my late mums Singer that looks like a later edition of your last machine built in the 1960s I think. The foot pedal gets very hot when I use it. Do you have any tips how I can resolve that please? Also I can't find bulbs that fit the light as the modern Singer bulbs don't fit the connections. Please share more of your machines. I would love to see your Jones ones. 💖

Hi Ann - I am so glad you found the video useful. I use Hammerite Evaporust which I bought from Halfords. I think its also available online. I havent had the problem of foot pedal getting very hot on mine but I do remember reading that if you havent removed the old fashioned capacitors installed to stop the machine from interfering with TV signals then that can cause the extra heat. I remove the capacitors in all my foot pedals as part of my restorations. Hope that helps! The 201K really is a special machine.

I bought the size 66 bobbins on eBay. They do generic ones. Hope that helps.

Wow, great restorations. Thanks for sharing. (Im the same way, but with old electric guitars :). ) I love how these old sewing machines are built. Theyre like tanks! I just got my 201K out to fix my jeans. Somethings wrong with the foot pedal though. Opened it up and found a capacitor had leaked all over the place.. Should be a simple enough fix or what do you think?

Hi Hila! I love your vintage 201k collection! I've recently purchased a treadle one like yours and although it is in very good shape, I can't actually make it sew. I'm having a lot of tension problems, I think from both over and under threads. Can you give me some advice please? Thanks a lot and happy sewing! :)

Did you figure out how to remove the take up lever from the "pink" 201k mk2? I replaced it recently, and i needed an extra tool to remove the cap that attaches it to the machine (plus, one of the screws is reversed!). Here is a link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W8C2F2/
