OMG, one step buttonhole from the 1930s! This is fabulous. What amazing engineering in the foot to make a straight stitch machine produce this fantastic work. I love that you have so many options with this mechanical system. Thanks for posting this.

Whoa! This is actually the coolest buttonholer I've ever seen in action! The 4-step buttonholers on domestic machines today don't even come close.

I have this version and a later 201. Two superb pieces of engineering. Perfect buttonholes. The process is so satisfying I could spend an afternoon putting buttonholes on everything. BTW these attachments are usually pretty cheap on ebay (uk).

The directions to this buttonholer says specifically that even if your feed dogs drop the screw on cover plate must still be used. There reason is because of the normal plate on the machine has long slots shaped much like the buttonhole as it forms and causes a drag in the back and forth movement limiting its free movement from side to side somewhat. This is why your buttonholes are coming out narrower on one side. Solution: attach the supplied cover plate like the directions say to do.

Hi Peter, Great Tutorial. I have a 1938 Singer 66-8 and was trying to find a button holler for it. Hence this was the perfect video. Since watching it I found the same exact one on ebay and just bought it tonight. Can't wait to try it out.

I love the old machines. I have 9 older machines and use them to teach sewing. I have an old 1947 White w/ knee pedal. It has a great bottom hole maker that works similar to this one makes perfect buttonhole every time. Thanks for the demonstration

I like that you just let the sewing machine do its thing at a normal speed. I see a lot of people on here sewing at full speed. Slow down, it's real life, not a sweatshop :)

Thank you for this bit of information! I have a Singer 99, from the serial # I found it was built in early 1942. While delivering newspapers I found it at the curb on trash day, bringing it home I found it was in excellent shape, complete with the attachment kit, instruction book, can of oil and tube of grease, all in the dark green color, belt, cords in excellent shape. I need to make some button holes, I was dreading it, but now I will approach it with confidence! Glad to see that there are other people still running these fine old machines.

Terrific video. I acquired one of these buttonholers three days ago but had no idea how it works. I tried it out on my 1891 vs hand-cranked Singer and Voila! It made a nice button hole. Unfortunately I do not have the plate to cover the feed dogs which cannot be dropped. Will have to try ebay to get the plate. Thanks again for the video.

These universal buttonholers are actually used on industrial machines, as well, & sell for over $99 when sold for industrial machines, but are as cheap as $.99 on eBay for regular straight stitch sewing machines.
@howardgoldstein82909 жыл бұрын
Rebecca, The industrial buttonholer is basically the same design, but on a much larger scale...I have them both, & the industrial model will not fit any household machine...

yes I did. It chuggs along just not catching the bobbin thread. The machine works beautifully without the attachment. The machine is a 1935 machine could it be the machine is to old for the buttonholer?
@plappin10 жыл бұрын
It should work. Sometimes I have this problem and changing the needle solves it. Check to make sure it's not the fabric -- does it do this with ALL fabric or just the fabric you're using at present? Hope that helps.

Thank you for your videos. Let me start off by saying I am very new to sewing. I have a fantastic featherweight 221. It works great on its own but when I put an attatchment on to it; it does not catch the bobbin thread i.e this buttonholer. Am I doing something wrong. I did follow the directions with the buttonholer and your tutorial. Help!
@plappin10 жыл бұрын
Carey, are you covering the feed dogs. On a featherweight, I believe they must be covered with the flat metal plate that should have come with your attachment.
@tumorfarmer9 жыл бұрын
Carey Price Make sure your needle is threaded from the right to the left, otherwise, it can't pick up the bobbin thread. It is a very common problem people have with Featherweights, because it seems logical that the thread should go from left to right, but if you have the needle in the machine correctly, (Flat side to the left), & thread the needle from the right to the left, it should pick up the bobbin thread with or without the buttonholer. You do need to use a feed dog coverplate to use a buttonholer with the 221. Also, make sure the arm of the buttonholer is over the needle screw, when you install it, but I suspect the needle threading direction is the actual problem. Don't be embarrassed, if it is, most of us have done that at least once, when we first used a Featherweight! :D

Are you sure you can use the ordinary screw? Most of the buttonholers on eBay are missing the special screw, and I'm told there's no source for them. So if you don't need the screw, I can get a bargain.

You should be able to use the same screw that holds your presser foot on.
