AJL merupakan kompetisi untuk menetukan lagu terbaik pada tahun tersebut. Bukan untuk penyanyi yang belum menjadi artis tetapi khusus untuk penyanyi yang sudah mengeluarkan lagu. Meraka mempertandingkan lagu2 mereka di dalam kompetisi ini.

Sekarang di Malaysia rancangan atau pertandingan (kompetisi) untuk penyanyi yang belum jadi artis sudah kurang popular. Awal 2000an banyak rancangan pertandingan nyanyian seperti AF (AFI di Indonesia) , Malaysia Idol, One in a Million, Mentor, Gangstarz etc. Sekarang show lebih kepada Yang sudah jadi artis dan bertanding antara mereka seperti Big Stage, Rookie Mania, Immortal Songs, Gegar Vaganza. Penyanyi generasi baru kebanyakan datang dari media sosial, bukan dari pertandingan nyanyian. AJL pula adalah penentuan lagu terbaik sepanjang tahun. Ia adalah battle between composers and songwriters dan bukannya penyanyi. Tapi penyanyi yang bagus adalah plus point penting dalam AJL kerana merekalah medium karya yang dipertandingkan. Dari saya yang kebosanan dan rajin nak menaip panjang.
