The way they go into that breakdown and keep it for the rest of the song??? amazing. I wish I could go back in time and see the 2004 lineup, as well as the 2013 lineup. (nothing wrong with Nightwish now but the energy during those eras were extremely MAGICAL)
@kimacronym25213 жыл бұрын
Great reaction ! I completely agree with everything you say - I was similarly stunned by this song. I thought that Ghost Love Score cannot be topped, also because of its length. Song of Myself is indeed surprising - in my opinion it feels closer to a classical composition, it reminds me more of how Richard Wagner would have composed the Ring of the Nibelungs today - something extremely dark, poetic lyrics, a lot of tonality, great singing, in short music that has to be at the level of Nordic Gods (Nibelungen). And I feel that this song in particular has these qualities, which is why we are taken by surprise, stunned. PS: After listening to many videos of NW now, and also solo pieces from Tarja and Floor, it is clear to me now that this band was blessed with 2 world class, outstanding female lead vocalists. Completely different, but both unique and with outstanding musicality. Again, both would have found their place in Wagner's compositions, and Nightwish resembles a modern version of this. Symphonic music in perfection.

The best Nightwish performance is the one I happen to be watching at the moment anyone asks me that question! I think I understand the way you feel about this performance. The breakdown part of this song is my favourite part of any Nightwish song. I love the tone of Floor's lower register I think the tone and timbre of her voice is what sets her apart from other singers. When you watch it again and you get to the breakdown take a note of Marco and Empuu walking behind Floor when she begins to sing. Another real Banger you have yet to hear is Seven Days to the Wolves, I thouroughly recommend it.

I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by how good Annette's version was - both the studio version, and at least one of the concerts from early on in the Imagenarium tour (apologies, can't remember off of my head which concert it was, but she sang it dang good there...maybe London?). I think Annette actually sang it in an even lower register than Floor (which from some other comment I read at some point, it seems that Annette has the lowest register of the three, and Tarja has the highest, but obviously Floor is the most versatile), but both of their voices and singing styles in this particular song are surprisingly very similar (although I think Floor was a little higher on that ending note). If I had to point to one thing that sets the two of them apart, it would be Floor's stage presence is much greater than Annette's (again, just speaking about this particular song, and not making any other comparisons).
@billmorrison82923 жыл бұрын
@@jaynagerber7474 I have listened to this version from the Montreux Jazz Festival and Annette didn't do a bad job. I do find her voice a little flat at times. Marco was very quiet in his singing though he has stated that he didn't have to hold back with Floor. Looking at Annette I get the impression she might not have been well but I have no idea whether this impression is valid.
@jaynagerber74743 жыл бұрын
@@billmorrison8292 It wasn't that one, it was from the early part of the tour (I believe it nay have been around March...Annette still had her dark hair), so she seemed to be in better condition (Montreux was towards the end of her time with Nightwish, and she seemed to already be in decline at that point). I can't look it up at the moment, but I just searched for "Nightwish Song of Myself live Annette 2012" or something like that, so if you're curious you can try that. She didn't sound flat to me (although I'm just listening on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, so I can't say it's super high quality), and thought she sounded pretty good overall.
@jaynagerber74743 жыл бұрын
Okay, just looked it up and it was Kiev, Mar 19 2012 (video courtesy of MissNammara). I've only watched it the one time, but it seemed to me that Marko sang higher than he typically did when accompanying Annette (although I may be remembering that incorrectly).

Another fine reaction, thanks Sabina! Regarding this WOA show, it remains one of the peak live performance experiences in my life. And for a bit of context of what I mean when I say that: -I grew up in Chicago with tons of show opportunities, starting back in the 60s, and have been fortunate enough to travel many parts of the world where I've seen many more fabulous concerts. -I've seen this band with every lineup except the current, and hope to remedy that in May in NYC. -During this trip to Wacken we saw Deep Purple, Rammstein, Gojira, Powerwolf, Soilwork, Sabaton, Motorhead, Doro and many others on Wed-Fri. Much greatness. Wonderful shows. -On Saturday we saw Alestorm, a bit of LoG, Sonata Arctica, Anthrax, Trivium and Alice Cooper. Another amazing day of rocking it out... Then Tuomas dropped his fist and THIS ride started! People speak of convergences and perfect storms and kismet and such. I'm not real clear on exactly what to attribute this all to, but what I do KNOW for sure is that SOMETHING WONDEROUS happened. Everything clicked and surged. The sum vastly exceeded the parts. And 80 thousand of us lived this ride together with each other and the band. This band in this moment was able to include this audience from all over the planet into, and I do mean into, the worlds that live in Tuomas. They've shared with us the sounds and visions of those worlds thousands of times over the years. This was different, and almost felt like an actual translation into those realms. Or something like that, what the hell do I know anyway?!? Well, I do know it was freaking cooler than most anything else ever felt in my life. So there! And just noting my personal favorites from this set... I take GLS out of the mix, because GLS. So, my top 5 in run of show order: Dark Chest, Ever Dream, Amaranth, Song of Myself, Last Ride. The other 10 numbers are literally just a tiny fraction lower in my own subjective voting, and rotate in and out of the top 5 list super easily. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I cherish the experience, am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be there, and those memories are never very deeply stored because they are revisited so often. I know, blah blah blah... Thanks again Sabina! rl Rock Strong 🤘😈🤘

Gabriel Bardac has a composite version on his channel of this live performance blending into the final section, "love", from the album. For me, it is THE perfect version although I can understand why the last section isn't spoken in live performances but displayed on the video wall behind them instead, which unfortunately is not picked up by the cameras. That section is extremely thought-provoking and completes the song.

Aside from the performance and musicality (both amazing), the thing I love most about the song is the inspiration and meaning. It’s inspired by Walt Whitman’s 52 line poem “Song of Myself”. In "Song of Myself," Walt Whitman celebrates the self. The speaker of the poem speaks not just for himself but for all mankind, praising the joy and wonder of experiencing nature. Whitman celebrates the human body and its ability to become one with the self and with nature. In Tuomas’s Song of Myself, there are reference to his previous works and internal reflection on his ability to become one with music. Music is his nature in his Song of Myself. “A catnap in the ghost town of my heart [Ghost Love Score?] She dreams of story time [Storytime] and the river ghosts [Ghost River] Of mermaids [Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean], of Whitman's and the ride [Last Ride of The Day]” “A song of me song in need Of a courageous symphony A verse of me verse in need Of a pure-heart singing me to peace” Lots of juxtaposition of the beauty of making music, the emptiness of having the music go quiet, and the inspiration to keep making the music that needs to be made.
@jaynagerber74743 жыл бұрын
Don't forget his reference back to the "dead boy", from "Dead Boys Poem", the first of the five great epic songs ("Dead Boys Poem", "The Beauty OF the Beast", "Ghost Love Score", "Song of Myself", and "The Poet and the Pendulum"); note that I don't include "The Greatest Show on Earth" as one of these five, as it does not seem to reference back to the others (unlike the last four, which all refer back to the others to some extent or another), although it is epic in its own right.
@roblaw45543 жыл бұрын

Hi Sabina! I think you would also really love the full-length 14 minute version which concludes with a beautiful spoken-word poem over a backdrop of the London Philharmonic Orchestra that was inspired by Walt Whitman's poem "Song of Myself" from his "Leaves of Grass" anthology. The actual studio album version is not as dynamically exciting as this live one, but a fan (I forget who) has put together a "Tribute to Ann Waychoff" version where they pasted the studio recording of the poem at the end of this Wacken song. It's worth looking up!

On the albums with Anette one of the songs i'd most like from her time with NW. This is one of my top 5 Live NW songs and i was sure you would love this version too! Thanks for this reaction video, i really enjoy it and it was so cool to see you how like the song! Bye! 🖤🤘🖤

I still feel Tuomas wrote his best 2 albums with Anette, but they were written for Floor, She brings so much energy to those song, many of them far darker than any other album but incredible songs.

a fav for a lot of us I think. If it was up to me I would swap it in for GLS in the "big 3" but hey luckily for everyone else I don't make these "important" decisions!! :D This song and Ghost river are my favs from this concert the part in Ghost River where Floor solos is amongst my favourite all time live parts of any song it is perfection for me!
