To Luscent- you have a great ear and will enjoy the many other gems that Tori has given us throughout the years. Two things: 1) her father is a minister, so you will hear the religious theme play throughout her catalog. 2) Me and A Gun (the acapella song) was inspired after she watched Thelma & Louise, but it is about her own rape. Thank you for this video!!!

The key to understanding a few of the songs, like Mother and Girl, is knowing that Tori Amos was a musical prodigy, she crawled up to the piano at the age of 2 and could play, she could replay songs after one listen by the age of 4 and was already composing her own music. At the age of 5 she was admitted to the Peabody Music Conservatory in Baltimore with a full scholarship, to this day the youngest person to ever get that honor. Unfortunately, at the age of 11 she was kicked out that program because she refused to learn to read sheet music, and she showed too much interest in contemporary music. Her father was a Methodist minister, he could see she was wallowing in her failure, so he pushed her to go out to perform at 13, the only places that they could find that would let her play were gay clubs in the Washington, D.C. area, which is humorous to think of her father with his clerical collar on and bringing her there. Tori was born Myra Ellen Amos, but she always hated that name, she performed as Ellen Amos for her teen years, but someone told her she looked like a Tori, and changed it.

Regarding Me and a Gun....the song is both autobiographical and a little bit of storytelling. She gave someone who was a regular at her shows (when she played piano bars) a ride and he abducted her at knife point, assaulted her, and forced her to sing hymns. After a few hours he left to go buy more drugs and she escaped. I think changing the weapon in the hands of the rapist was a way to both make it not entirely her story and use a more powerful word choice for the lyrics.

@Crazy_Christine84 Жыл бұрын
Sadly, this is true. 😢 The song, “Me and a Gun”, is a very raw, haunting, imagery-filled, lyrical ride through Tori Amos’ past. It navigates through Tori’s horrific and traumatic experience of being kidnapping, being held hostage by a crazed addicted drug-fuelled fan, and being sexually assaulted (in Tori’s own words in an interview I’ve read, she described this as being “held down” at “gun point” and repeatedly “being raped”). For a long time, she blamed herself, just as many courageously strong and resilient survivors do. I can only imagine that by kindly offering a fan a ride home way back then (it was the late 80s or early 1990s), how that could have compounded her unjustifiable guilt and self-blame. It’s heart wrenching when you sit down, REALLY listen to the song lyrics fully knowing the backstory of what happened to Tori Amos - all the emotional, physical and psychological pain she must have felt for a long time. In an article I had come across in my late teenage years/early 20s, Tori was explaining how she HAD TO write the song, “Me and a Gun”, because to her, it was a very therapeutic experience that helped her get past it and move forward more towards healing, a stronger her and a better future. I’m paraphrasing here. I’m thankful we have the fortunate opportunity and gift of Tori Amos, her well-versed journey of lyrics, and her amazingly talented music skills. 🎶

Great, thoughtful reaction! I really like hearing you talk about her dynamics and harmonies and details of the songwriting that I haven't seen discussed in other reactions to this album. It was a great perspective. It was interesting how you were talking about how uplifting/hopeful/joyous Tear in Your Hand, and then it's immediately followed by Me and a Gun--so the dynamics and playing with listener extends to even the sequence of the songs on the album. I think her next two albums are even stronger than this one musically, but the lyrics definitely become more indirect and more imagistic and coded.

Omg. FINALLY!!!! :D thanks so so so much!!!! I always thought you might appreciate her songwriting and piano playing a lot. So interested in what you think of her next two albums and maybe more. Since you mentioned her key changes / harmonies and that it might be intuitive... she was actually a child prodigy playing and studying the piano from the age of 5 at Peabody Institute in the US until she was kicked out at age 11 for "musical insubordination", cause she rather wanted to play and study the Beatles and other contemporary music. In later interviews she explains how studying the works of classical masters really informed her song writing... anyway, so much to discover. and you are really one, if not the best of all reactors to dissect her music sonically, lyrically and emotionally. So looking forward to this.

Round about 21:44: Yes, most of the songs in this album have always seemed to me to be about growing up. And it touches on themes of women growing up that we rarely year in songs. Silent All These Years could actually be about how women's voices have largely been silent in rock, even with the women that have made it big, I think they have always been told to shy away from anything that seems even remotely negative towards men ("so you can make me come, that doesn't make you jesus"), even though so much of rock has been negative towards women. These are just human thoughts, human concerns, human feelings and are not wrong and shouldn't have ever been silenced.

I like the duality in “Winter” where it applies to both her & her Father. She says to him “when you going to make up your mind when you going to love you as much as I do”. Letting her Dad know she is proud of him & wants him to love himself like she loves him just as he always told her throughout her growing up & different stages in life.
@NeilNTR Жыл бұрын
I always thought it was advise from her father because before the phrase, Tori says "he says" "when you gonna ..." I'm not 100% sure and I might have to go dig for my CD to be sure.
@openyourchakras918 Жыл бұрын
@@NeilNTR yeah the last verse is what I am referring to, she doesn’t say he said on the verse “hair is grey & the fires are burning, so many dreams on the shelf you say I wanted you to be proud of me, I always wanted that myself” This is where the way she says it & the verbiage could be taken as both of them feeling the way or saying that line. Because we don’t know who is saying “you”. We could easily take it as Tori saying it to her father but the duality is that is could be the father saying it to Tori.

After having major back surgery at 30 & dealing with that I may die in the near future, that so much of what I love to do was taken from me by a botched surgery…you become numb. So “give me life, give me pain, give me myself again” always struck a cord with me as an empath but after major back surgery it took on a whole meaning. I was in constant pain & lost so many things that brought me bliss. I became numb & so in both being an empath and processing & dealing with extremely important life events that may come sooner than I should have been thinking about them…I eventually became numb. So even though I was in constant pain…I emotionally became numb and this is one of my favorite songs & parts of the song still to this date. I think she is saying the human errors made over & over that end up becoming so normal we become numb to horrific things happening daily around the world, we need to get back to putting humanity into the word human. So she is saying “give me life, give me pain, give me myself again”. People don’t deal with their crap and deflect and start hating certain groups of people in society (usually fueled by media, news, world leaders & politicians) that people hate themselves so much for things they did, do & continue to do that their self hate is manifested towards others & cause pain to avoid reflection. I take this part “give me life, give me pain, give me myself again” as let me reprogram the little earthquakes (lies & propaganda) the at seep into my life & start actually being a loving human again. Deal with my own 💩 & stop displacing my self-hate, self image of being worthless, regrets, selfishness, anger, etc onto other people to feel a bit better without actually healing. She is saying to live we need to feel pain of others & the pain we cause others & to ourselves & continue to teach our children & actually feel the pain in he world, pain sadly makes you realize how precious life is & that things society focuses on are meaningless. We need to feel the pain of Mother Earth, of our fellow man, and of the pain we inflict on ourselves for not being the image we are lead to believe we can achieve. You put the power back in your hands (where it has always been) when you reprogram the messages society & the elites want you to focus on & when that power is back in your hand…you truly live again. So process your crap, stop hating others or blaming others because you want to avoid the hate & lack of love you have for yourself because of crap those who control the world through power & fortune want you to feel worthless or the worthlessness your parents may have deflected onto you. As a child we love ourselves, we love our fellow humans, we feel their pain…society & the images & rules the elites push to purposely have you question, judge & slowly make you hate yourself ends up becoming hate towards others & placing blame on anyone but the true person that is to blame…yourself. So you need to reflect inward process the pain to truly live life & find yourself again. Once you regain the love for yourself, you will naturally treat others the way you treat yourself. We need to heal this world & the destructive things we do to our own self-image, self-love & self-esteem that creates the hate & inhumane response we end up becoming numb to…this is what I take from the song “Little Earthquakes”. Elevator music is the reason you feel hate, not allowing yourself to be the beautiful person you were as a child & teaching yourself to destroy the love for yourself which eventually destroys the love for anyone else. You can’t love someone else if you don’t love yourself.

I understand that Tori was a pastor's daughter. People looked at her with more scrutiny that other children. Lest you think she was living under some tyranny, her father was supportive of her musical career, drove her to performances when she was younger. I could be getting some of this wrong, but she's become a bit of mythology to me. She has been, in no small way, my savior with her music.

Funny thing about Silent All These Years: Tori originally wrote it thinking she would give it to Al Stewart, with whom she had recently appeared on stage, and maybe kinda had a thing with. You can find the video of her playing the piano part of Year of the Cat on YT, although the quality is mediocre and he gives her this ridiculous Russian pseudonym. Giving the song to him is in the intro to it on VH1 Storytellers (also here on YT). There honestly isn’t a Tori album that I don’t like, although some hit differently than others. As she tried to bring out explicitly in American Doll Posse, she has multiple voices: soft and romantic, loud and rebellious, quiet and contemplative, and occasionally just roaring with fury.

This is an EPIC song. That's all, that's the comment.

I’ve always interpreted “Girl” as a mother thinking about her newborn daughter, seeing how it’s like she already belongs to so many people and wondering if she will ever belong to herself. Reflecting on what it’s like for her to live as a woman in the world and worrying about how she is now bringing a daughter into it.

If you don't get chills sometime during this album, give up, you're not alive.

You should react to 'Precious things' live.

so strange to see a reaction of a foundational album from years and years ago... it shows you how ahead she was.. of everything.

ME and a gun is her recounting the story of when she was rated. She and Calvin Klein formed RAIN.

Tori is just as brilliant live as she is in the studio. She's one of those rare performers who can capture an audience with just her voice and piano. I've seen her work evolve. I don't care as much for her more recent music as it doesn't seem as structured as the first few years. This is just a personal preference. Maybe I need to catch up to her! She continues to stretch herself beyond the boundaries that most artists could never reach. "Little Earthquakes" is a masterpiece. I hope you continue with some of her other CDs.

Green Limousine is a song by the Bad Loves. Wonder if that's the reference.

The song is from 1993. It would have been hearable when she wrote the album.

Tori Amos is definitely America's Kate Bush-harmonically, vocally, lyrically, and the emotional tone of the songs. Little Earthquakes definitely gives me Hounds of Love vibes... with maybe a little Alanis Morissette mashed in for good measure.

As someone below said, Me and a Gun is not completely fictional. Amos was assaulted irl.

It quite surprised me you saying Tori has a Kate Bush vibe in some of her experimental moments. Don't know why I've never thought of it. I can't un-think it now.

The nine inch nails is probably a tongue in cheek reference to Trent Reznor. I think they were dating at the time, if I remember correctly. He does back up on "past the mission..."
