There are literally thousands of groups that have the same instrumentation as the Beatles. Two guitars, bass and drums. But because of the way they each played, they created a sound that was incomparable. Add to that their harmony counterpoint in this song and it's still remarkable how remarkable they were to this day. ( No stage monitors either! )

I remember the world before the Beatles and the world after the Beatles was very different. It was a hell of a lot more fun! Their music was initially better than any thing we were hearing from the formulaic music industry in America. After the initial success where they were mixing covers with their own music, they started doing just their music (rubber soul) and that's when their genius really started to shine. There was no looking back and they still can't be beat for their awesome versatile creativity. Long live the Beatles. I still miss those guys. I was lucky enough to get to see and hear them in 1965. August 18th Atlanta Georgia. They had a good sound system and we could hear them unlike many of their shows.

No one in pop music ever created more create songs with more variety, hitting every imaginable style: psychedelica, blues, 1920s dancehall, folk-rock, hard rock, musique concrète, string quartet, bubblegum, classical guitar inspired, gorgeous love songs, songs that would work in musical theater, rock anthems, R&B. Your point regarding live vs record back in the day was point on. As an example, I held an ambivalent opinion of the 70's group Kansas until I saw them in concert. It was the most amazing thing I ever heard. Incredible musician ship! Brian May, of Queen no less, said that he and Freddie were watching them play and " I said to Freddie 'these guys are playing this?' Unbelievable music and they sounded like a record'". Those were the days, weren't they?

Quick point of order -- On the line "Won't you PLEASE please help me" in the refrain, it's John on that high falsetto... much as they did on the bridge of "I Saw Her Standing There". There are enough bootlegs and officially released outtakes of them working on both songs that we can tell who's singing what in the harmonies. John loved taking a lot of those falsetto harmonies when he was able to pull it off, though given Paul's tendency to break out the Little Richard impression in those days it's easy to confuse the two.

I was lucky enough to grow up in an era where there were no tuners. The documentary series The Beatles Anthology revealed that Lennon wrote the lyrics of the song to express his stress after the Beatles' quick rise to success. "I was fat and depressed and I was crying out for 'Help'"- Lennon

Beatlemania was so crazy! I remember going to see "A Hard Day's Night", in the theater, when it first came out and not being able to hear the movie at all because of all the screaming. It was a movie for heaven's sake and they were screaming like it was a live concert. I was 10 at the time and I remember going home with a terrible headache. I loved the Beatles, still do and am so grateful that I got to experience it all from the beginning. It's something that people will never truly understand unless they were there. The anticipation of waiting for the next song to come out and then playing the 45's and albums we did have until they were scratched and skipping. It was magical!
@justmaitake59102 жыл бұрын
Not for anything brother, but that's John Lennon who takes the high note on the word "Pleaseee please..." He usually took the high note in the early days between he and Paul, same with the song "Please Please Me" and "I Saw Her Standing There" and other songs. Those were all Lennon taking the high note. McCartney does attempt the high "Help" note in the intro, and you can hear the difference between McCatney's voice cracking on that high note and Lennon's smooth, clean high note on the word "Please..."
@dougsusie23193 жыл бұрын
When John wrote this song he called it his fat Elvis period, he said he was eating and drinking like a pig. He was feeling very constricted by the whole Beatlemania thing and it was beginning to depress him. These guys did 3 world tours 64-66 and could never see anything but hotel rooms. They couldn't move about anywhere, they would have been crushed by fans, that would suck after a while. They also never played a show longer then 30 minutes for fear of riot conditions. Like Ringo said on the Anthology series, "we played for thirty minutes, 25 if we didn't like you" very Ringo, great sense of humor like they all had. I saw The Beatles in Pittsburgh when I was six years old, it was absolutely crazy, and one of the greatest experiences of my life to this day. You couldn't hardly hear a damn thing from the count in on the first song it was sheer pandemonium. They only had 25 watt amps in those days, could you imagine that? They were just way ahead of the technology back then for those types of audiences. I forgot, I saw them in September of 64.

You perfectly grabbed the essence of the Beatles magic: there you see four regular lads (wearing suits on a scenario, I grant that), just fooling around, just like you, just like me, just like any other guy, and then, suddenly, they started playing the most wonderful music anyone had ever listened to on that moment. You're right, there's no one like the Beatles. Thanks for your reaction.

I’m not sure of the main reason of where the lyrics came from; but I did hear (at the time of its release) that after the director for the movie wanted a better title John and Paul created the song that evening and it was ready the next morning. what you said about today's concerts with all sorts of things going on up on stage, is something I have always said. Whereas the Beatles didn't have any distractions on the stage while performing...then again NO actsback then had what you see happening on stage now, it was very simple.

Just to put the screaming into perspective, you need to check out the period when Sinatra was the man, and listen to the youngsters screaming in the audience. And also Elvis with the utter joy and screams from his fans. Decades before in the UK, audiences were enchanted by the duo Anne Ziegler and Webster Booth and the music of Ivor Novello. Audiences will react and the reaction is quite involuntary at first, becoming a required behavior. I was there when the Beatles period began. Their music was a revelation, it was exciting and listening to it was like an electrical stimulus taking over your body. It affected all age groups and the world became a better place. Their contribution to popular music is unparalleled. The question for me is ' are the reviewers qualified for the job ?' Sheffield South Yorkshire.

Back then, bands had to tour or at least play live in one spot like Elvis to earn more money. Now a band could live stream or sell digital copies of music for instant happiness for fans. It's not the same experience but they have so many ways of earning money without touring. Back then you had concerts, and records until the store ran out. Seeing a band live was so magical because you knew very little info about them. Now you see celebrities posting their dinner plates and daily events online. It's too much exposure. There's no real mystery.
