I love this song. It blows my mind. Pure musical genius who doesn't get the credit she deserves. Sad really. This song is a representation of one of her better pieces of work...

This song is absolutely amazing. A true invitation to intimacy-she effortlessly emotes the kind of things lovers pillow talk about. MCC takes us on a journey full of longing, remembering, nostalgia, and the true sting of love as well as it's unapparelled beauty. Or something like that!

Hard to believe this was shot in 1995, I had the pleasure of seeing her play in Belfast with this band around the mid 2000's in Belfast. John Jennings was a great collaborator and soulmate..... RIP John. I have since seen her twice live and it has always been a special treat, and quite emotional because her songs are from the soul, and so very, very special. Long may she prosper ....

Both my parents are now gone. Mom passed away 3 yrs ago at 92, and dad made it until 2023, passing away at 96. I sit here today at 61. Going through black and white photos of mom visiting my dad in post WW2 Germany at the tale end of the war, as dad stayed over there as an ordinary private as the Marshal Plan was being installed, the photos are of 2 kids, in love, with the potential peace and prosperity that lay before them after the darkest of chapters were closed out. And now, looking at those pictures, I'm clearly older now than they were then "that summer night." . It hit me like a punch the first time I heard MCC sing of this occurance in the life of a child who outlives their parents. I knew one day this song would be my roadmap through grief when they are finally gone. And, alas, those days are now here. I cant say it makes my sadness any less, except for the fact it is a loss and a memory shared by other people, and as usual, it is the observation of our poets like MCC to bring this to our attention to make sure we dont miss it, which makes me feel less alone. And while it is a poignent sadness, it is tempered by a profound gratitude I have that my dad made it home. Many did not. I love and miss you both dearly, mom and dad.
@mattciavarella71193 ай бұрын
This is a beautiful tribute to your parents. May their memory be a blessing. Also, I love that phrase you coined "a poignant sadness tempered by a profound gratitude..."; it reminds us that grief needn't always be all-consuming and awful and that it reaches out and makes room for other emotions like gratitude to temper and ease our pain. What a beautiful thought. Wherever you are, I wish you peace and happiness.

This is such a beautiful tribute to your parents. There are so many of us boomers in similar situations. Thank you for sharing yours. And Mary Chapin Carpenter is a real national treasure. Her songwriting talent and musician's ability to write an arrange music is simply amazing. I find her voice to be so comforting and soothing. I don't know how to describe it, but she has a sort of quiet power. She makes so many of us think and reflect.

I was floored years ago by her lyrics. As in Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes you're the bug . I can certainly relate to that. I didn't keep up with her work after that. I accidentally stumbled upon this song and the "photograph" lyric really hit home. I'll be listening to more of her music now!

Some people remember the first time Some can't forget the last Some just select what they want to from the past It's a song that you danced to in high school It's a moon you tried to bring down On a four-in-the-morning drive through the streets of town Come on come on, it's getting late now Come on come on, take my hand Come on come on, you just have to whisper Come on come on, I will understand It's a photograph taken in Paris, at the end of the honeymoon In 1948, late in the month of June Your parents smile for the camera in sienna shades of light Now you're older than they were then that summer night Come on come on, it's getting late now Come on come on, take my hand Come on come on, you just have to whisper Come on come on, I will understand It's a need you never get used to, so fierce and so confused It's a loss you never get over the first time you lose And tonight I am thinking of someone, seventeen years ago We rode in his daddy's car down the river road Come on come on, it's getting late now Come on come on, take my hand Come on come on, you just have to whisper Come on come on, I will understand Come on come on, it's getting late now Come on come on, take my hand Come on come on, you just have to whisper Come on come on, I will understand Come on come on

@SharedExperience I agree, if I had to choose I would say the dreaming road is my favorite. I can't stop playing it, I absolutely love the opening guitar, it like pulls back the cover of my heart and engages it in the story of the song. Sha is so talented. I am so grateful that she has recovered. I have missed her so.

I like the tempo of this recording--slower than the CD version. I heard her in concert earlier this week--great entertainer. In this age of amped-up sound, she held the audience spellbound with just her voice, a guitar, and a pianist. By the way, does anyone have an idea who the speaker and the listener are in the song? I love the lyrics, but I'm not sure I understand them.
