CLIP DESCRIPTION:
During Lina's (Jean Hagen) performance, the men open the curtain to reveal the true singer - Kathy (Debbie Reynolds).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hollywood, 1927: the silent-film romantic team of Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) is the toast of Tinseltown. While Lockwood and Lamont personify smoldering passions onscreen, in real life the down-to-earth Lockwood can't stand the egotistical, brainless Lina. He prefers the company of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), whom he met while escaping his screaming fans. Watching these intrigues from the sidelines is Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), Don's best pal and on-set pianist. Cosmo is promoted to musical director of Monumental Pictures by studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell) when the talking-picture revolution commences. That's all right for Cosmo, but how will talkies affect the upcoming Lockwood-Lamont vehicle "The Dueling Cavalier"? Don, an accomplished song-and-dance man, should have no trouble adapting to the microphone. Lina, however, is another matter; put as charitably as possible, she has a voice that sounds like fingernails on a blackboard. The disastrous preview of the team's first talkie has the audience howling with derisive laughter. On the strength of the plot alone, concocted by the matchless writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Singin' in the Rain is a delight. But with the addition of MGM's catalog of Arthur Freed-Nacio Herb Brown songs -- "You Were Meant for Me," "You Are My Lucky Star," "The Broadway Melody," and of course the title song -- the film becomes one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made.

Donald O'Connor was very underrated. He often played the sidekick in the shadow of actors like Gene Kelly and others. Personally, watching this movie growing up, I always had a little crush on Cosmo. I thought Kathy was crazy to fall for Don Lockwood (although he was handsome, too.) Donald O'Connor could sing, act, and dance as well as any other actor AND he was absolutely adorable. @@myheartssay "In the looping sequence, Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is seen dubbing the dialogue for Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) because Lina's voice is shrill and screechy. However, it's not Reynolds who is speaking, it's Jean Hagen herself, who actually had a beautiful deep, rich voice. So you have Jean Hagen dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing Jean Hagen. And when Debbie is supposedly dubbing Jean's singing of "Would You?" the voice you hear singing actually belongs to Betty Noyes, who had a much richer singing voice than Debbie." Interestingly, there are a lot of homages to the silent movie era actors in this film, weather intentional or not; Gene Kelly's character is very much like Charlie Chaplin was in real life. Donald O'Connor's character is much like Buster Keaton was in real life. The producer was named Roscoe, and the same man who discovered both Keaton and Chaplin was Roscoe Arbuckle. The scene where Gene Kelly's character is mobbed is mirroring an experience Charlie Chaplin had, where his fans mobbed him and tore his clothes, stole his hat, and took his cane. Harold Lloyd faced the problem with having a voice that the audience didn't like. There is a sequence where Gene Kelly's character has on a suit, a straw sports hat, and horn-rimmed glasses, giving him a striking resemblance to Harold Lloyd's screen persona. And the list goes on. I can't help wondering if it were intentional.

Having been prompted by Debbie Reynolds that she would like to sing it in the key of A flat ( as if the orchestra had versions in all twelve keys anyway!), they then strike up the intro in E flat.

This is primarily for the joke of Lena's accent being too heavy for the band players to understand, hearing A flat as E flat.

The conductor clearly said "A flat", so Lena's accent couldn't be blamed. I'm happy that I'm not the only person who noticed that the orchestra played this song in E flat.

@@elwoodblues9613 Yeah, but the orchestra was Scottish, so they thought the conductor meant "E flat".
