Singing indri lemur in Mitsinjo Forest near Perinet. The indri pictured is feeding; the indri call was recorded earlier in the day. The indri's song has compared to that of the humpback whale. It can be heard more than 2 miles away

Just thinking that these cries have been ringing out since before our species even existed. Ancient, ancient songs.

The local people say the Indris' song reminds them that we came from the jungle, too.

So, 77million years ago, apparently, we both descended from a common ancestors. These guys sing much better than some humans I’ve heard!

Remember trying to record these calls on my phone but the frequency or something meant that it just came out as a big fuzz! Thank you for this, brings me back to Madagascar!

I was using a 70-200 mm lens on a Canon SLR. The Indri was eating leaving about 7-8 m away--so very low.

For over 12 years, researchers recorded songs from 20 different indri groups, analyzed them for rhythmic features, and discovered 1:1 and 1:2 rhythms for the first time in a nonhuman mammal. According to the researchers, the last common ancestor between humans and indris lived approximately 77 million years ago. Researchers suspect that a combination of common ancestry and convergent evolution could be the reason why Lemurs can sign with a rhythm.

Some sound like broken violins xD Very eerie...I wouldn't want to be walking in the dark listening to that. I mean, the loon's call is enough for me to take hahah. Still would love to visit Madagascar :-)

i saw a few indri's in madagascar, they were about 10m away (really lucky), it then used 3-4 huge bounds to get about 20m away, unbelievable ability to jump through the forest. what an amazing animal. the calls send a shiver down your spine.

Early explorers heard these calls and thought that the place was haunted so they named them lemurs, the latin word for spirit/specter.

Destruction of forest habitat has wiped out half of the Indri families. Humans need to get off this island and let God's creatures survive.
