Hello Jeff! I would just like to thank you for all your vocal lessons. My mother use to teach me vocal singing when I was younger and your lessons are the closest I've come across to the style of tuition she used to teach people, so you've helped me pick up where I left off with her. Taken a year but my vocals are now back in shape. Many thanks for your valuable teachings!

@@christianrasmussen9519 Oh,you will. As a singer myself, I know how nerve wracking it is. Drink some water, warm up your voice to some Jeff Rolka videos, and give it all you got. I’m rooting for you!

This was a great long workout! That’s a great tip for stage performance anxiety. I sometimes get it when it does happen I remember the people who are on the other side are the same people we encounter everyday. If people are nasty they are not worth your presence not in an arrogant way but if you don’t have something nice to say like Momma says “Don’t say it at all”! Jeff I really need your videos and without you coming on and showing up I would not have gotten here so far. God bless you and I hope that helps a little too!

I have a question about the effect of how loud one sings on the overtones. Listening to recordings - especially my own- I find that at lower playback or recording settings, the upper partials, which I feel give ring or squillo to the sound, are less apparent. I think of the sound as fuller or perhaps more baritone like. However, at louder volumes, the notes sound more tenor like and even more on pitch. Poorly said. At lower volumes sometimes my sound seems a bit flat although I feel I'm singing the way I always do. Singing louder, I seem more on pitch or at least the sound seems more in the center of the pitch. Do the overtones drop off so much in volume that one needs a certain amount of volume to reveal the voice such as it is? Does that mean one has to think about, and perhaps modify, timbre when singing softly? Not talking about belting or screaming the notes out here. These are "nothing in the throat' and 'no pushing' singing. Or at least my best attempts at it. Incidentally, I think some of your old faithful exercises are comforting and help me ease into my groove as it were. New ones help me in learning to make my transitions and train my ear to sing in real time. Both good but, man, there are so many! No boredom here.

You have great ears that serve you well. The volume is a by-product of sufficient sub glottic air pressure and soft tissue release-but we're talking about two different things when we compare a recording versus when we're singing live. With a recording, the volume of the overtones is much less than the fundamental (the note that is being sung) and as such, may not be as apparent at lower volumes. By increasing the volume, it's bringing all the recorded information up, and once the overtones get over the threshold of hearing, they would be more audible. When singing live, we absolutely must give consideration to timbre once we have volumes that are outside of our middle ground. That will be different for every vocalist, but once we are too soft to have the release and sub glottic air pressure required to stimulate the higher partials, we have to adjust. Yes, your ears serve you very well, we sound out of tune when those partials are absent. This is a big reason why many vocalists can sing a note in tune in their zona di passaggio or above, but sound flat. Their voices have insufficient release and soft tissue flexibility to create the overtones needed for our ears to hear them as being in tune.
