Agreed. I believe that if an army of performance masters, choreography wizards, and voice coaches tried to make this for a thousand years they couldn't do better. It's a masterpiece. Every nuance. How he holds his hands, when he holds his hands, when he shakes, when he calms down. It's just amazing.

@depper

The backstory to this song is as amazing as the song. This is a social justice protest song that his manager, NBC execs and sponsors refused to allow Elvis to sing, afraid of the social climate at the time, race riots etc. Steve Binder the lone NBC exec helped Elvis to get this song in right at the end of his special. Elvis was hurting bad after the assassination of MLK and Robert Kennedy and wanted to say something as the country was in mourning and chaos. Elvis struck an incredible tone with this song, which was modeled after MLKs I Have A Dream speech. Elvis was a rebel and this song's lyrics STILL resonate today.

You missed out the war in Vietnam too and I wouldn't call it "social justice" it was just common sense social justice is a little bit different as we see nowadays. He also went to President Nixxon to talk about the war on drugs too.
@depper
@depper 2 жыл бұрын
@@WillHoward2002 I would call it social justice. Thats what it was it was - race riots on the streets and on TV and good people trying to find a way forward through the mess. Elvis was one of those good guys. So was Dr Martin Luthyer King and Robert Kennedy. Yes Vietnam was also part of the issues going on at the time. And that brought in many issues, race, religion and AGE discrimination. AKA... social issues.

His voice I so distinguishable decade by decade or even year by year. Compare his voice from pre army (1958-1960) to post-army 1960 onwards. Early 60s he had little to no rasp but he could turn it on on a bluesy number like Reconsider BABY then sing semi-operatic on Surrender or It's Now or Never with the most smooth, golden voice. Yes, at the special he upped the rasp as he knew he wanted to show the doubters that he still had it. Incredible that he had no formal vocal training unlike many of today's artists who have vocal coaches as someone else mentions. His voice was a true gift and he just knew how to look after it x

ELVIS was such a unique singer! He packed such a large amount of songs; over 800 recordings actually, from18 yrs old until his untimely death! Each decade brought a NEW ELVIS for us to obsess over! And, man was I ever obsessive with this Wonderful entertainer! He revolutionized music and society! John Lennon repeatedly said "Before ELVIS there was NO music, after ELVIS there was NOTHING"! No more truer statement was EVER made! GOD made a wonderfully creative, beautiful man, that was an unbelievable humanitarian who never forgot his humble beginnings! GOD blessed him with a phenomenol voice, stage presence that has never been equaled, unbounding love for everyone (no matter skin color or ethnic background)! GOD wrapped this fantastic creature with all of his glorious blessings and he instilled the confidence that he would need, and ELVIS PRESLEY was born! I am sure that most people know the wonderful story that inspired the song, "If I Could Dream"! He was one of a kind! Thank GOD for blessing us with the wonderful man and awesome entertainer who became the KING of ROCK and ROLL, ELVIS! He was inducted into 5 MUSIC HALL OF FAMES, some say he was in 7 Hall of FAMES! He made 31 movies, had an unbelievable amount of number 1 hits, and so many awards and accolades that it is impossible to count them all! To this DAY, he remains the best selling artist of ALL time! Thank you very much for your reaction!

He only sung this song twice for the special, NEVER sang it anywhere else. This was a very emotional song for him and he put everything into it. The special is a must see. After listening to the background of this song and those around him, during interviews. Elvis felt the song was needed during that time, between the JFK and MLK assassinations, he knew the raw emotions would not be transferred to any other performance. This has to be his most heart felt performance EVER, he knew that and wanted to keep it at that.

Still my favorite performance by him and there are many. Everything just came together for the finale of that show and I forget what Christmas song they had picked for him, it was something like I'll Be Home for Christmas. But he really wanted to do something that mattered and one of his songwriters who knew how torn up Elvis was about the assassination of Dr King and just all the unrest in general comma wrote the song specifically for him period when Elvis heard the demo he said I am doing this and I'm never going to do another song that I don't believe in. In contrast, when Parker heard it, he rejected it immediately, saying, this is not an Elvis kind of song.

Yep- his last song & the movie holds true in that he fought the Col tooth & nail to close w it & not a Christmas song. Where the movie digresses is they use the album version. You can tell this is live as he jumbles/flips a cpl of the lines in that last stanza. All the more endearing for me. I imagine the raspy throat may also have had something to do w some nerves/dry mouth as it was one of a very few times he told the Col to go pound sand, but agree- if he could have just gotten ‘on top of his vocal chords’ I call it. No matter- beautiful song, purpose, message, & performance. I personally enjoyed the film. My husband had the incredible experience of seeing Elvis perform live & had been resistant, but enjoyed it as well. Baz Luhrmann has a frenetic style of directing, but for me, it worked. If you’ve not heard Elvis’ Bridge Over Troubled Water, My Way, or American Trilogy- highly recommend! Truly enjoyed your reaction!! SUBSCRIBED❤️ Stay safe & love much💖

He used the rasp throughout the 68 special. There is another performance of this song in black leather from this special and his vocals are slightly more hoarse than on this take in the white suit. I bought the audio out take performances from this special and included are some cuts that were done in his dressing room like "When it Rains it Really Pours". That take is rasp upon rasp sweet goodness as if driving through Tupelo in 1945 hearing it from someone's porch. Try out One Night With You from this special in black leather. It'll be a treat. For endurance, he quickly phased the rasp out for the duration of his 1970s acts or else he would not be able to recover with back to back shows.

From a vocal analysis, I appreciate your comments. From a musical history point? Not so much. This is the most heartfelt performance of any meaningful song by any performer ever. It was indeed the last song of a show that was supposed to be a Christmas Special but Elvis had other ideas. Next time you listen to the song, just listen and feel. :)

Live show last song of the night. He was emotionally connected to this song. And he had to fight the network they said it was too controversial.

Watch the video clips of him on the '68 Special doing Trying to Get Back to You and then Memories. Very different types of songs and very different vocals. Beautiful voice. Beautiful man. Would love to see you do both and compare.

Elvis's talent was natural he didn't need to time or knowingly pace himself. I believe you failed to recognized he did that live in one take in front of millions of viewers.

You should check out his 1970 cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water (must be this version, easily the best). Great use of distortion/vocal fry. This was the last song of the Special and he'd done multiple takes of this and other songs.

This is a great performance by Elvis, thank you for posting it, if you would like to know more of the back story of this song and of this performance, there a some videos on KZbin where Steve Binder who directed the special tells some great stories about the making of the special and how this song was written especially for Elvis to close the show and how he reacted to the song

I believe there is two diff versions of this performance. Only noticeable through where his eyes are and how he holds mic in the beginning. You might pick out diff observations on the other one. I can hear diff.

The Voice that never failed the man! That song is as relevant now as it was then! It's even better that now a younger generation is finding this man that definitely preached the gospel with his voice! Shame you have to pause because of youtube copyright. Elvis should get a pass! lol

I enjoy listening to the analysis of Elvis' voice. It was so natural for him and so impossible for many other professional singers. If I Can Dream was the finale of the year's biggest, most successful music show. Somehow it did not get credited as a #1 record on the billboard charts. I personally believe politics played a part. The song has the sales and he airplay. Today no one would believe it didn't own the charts. The same can be said for Burning Love and Moody Blue. I guess someone just didn't want Elvis to pass the Beatles with #1 hits.
