@@jvelero7899 It is a matter of personal preference! Bayanihan's version is the folk dance and the closest if you can to the original Singkil possibly first danced in Mindanao. Whereas, the Leyte Dance Theater version is stylized, modernized and conceptualized by their choreographer. I also happen to know some members of the Leyte Dance Theater and I am from Leyte (Tacloban) as well. But still, imho, both dance companies are amazing!

Origins of Singkil: All south east asian countries and even east asian countries have a lot of Indian influence since 1500-2000 years ago. It is most apparent in Thailand and Indonesia though, since they are extremely proud of their history and culture. As for Philipines, Spanish colonialists were famous for brutal forced conversions and supressing indegenous cultures(more so in Mexico and south america, where all of Mayan books and knowledge was destroyed). Hence, the influences in Philipines decreased, except in Mindanao. Singkil is the filipino Ramayana, a story of God Ram (who is born as a human) whose wife is kidnapped by a demon king who takes her thousands of kilometres away to his kingdom and he raises an army of apes to defeat the demon king and get his wife back. Singkil initially showed the prince and princess as gods, and other religious things too, however after the region where it is performed became Muslim, they changed the gods to humans so that it doesn't clash with their religion. Dances based on the Ramayana are present all over the ASEAN countries, including Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, although the name and the story will be slightly different based on the culture. Extra fact: Thai kings have the title " Rama" because Lord Ram was considered the perfect ruler and perfect man( he was a prince in exile when his wife was kidnapped and later became king when his exile of 14 years was over.)

A superb performance as expected of the primary Philippine dance troup Bayanihan. The royal dance is well choreographed, unclutered unlike some regional dance troups. It faithfully tells a story of the royal couple. Unlike other dance troups dancing Singkil, it is not crowded with too many dancers. It is tribute to the original leaders of the Bayanihan that has stringent standards to choose only the best dancers to perform for the company. I believe it was Ms. Helena Benitez and Ms Lucrecia Kasilag who were prime movers of this much acclaimed, world class dance company, the Bayanihan.

Singkil is the Filipino version of the Ramayana, the story of God Ram (Hindu, Indian god). Dear God🙏💞 in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in the bible that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as my Lord. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Amen.

Thank you Google!!! The female lead dancer plays the role of Princess Gandingan of the Darangen epic, wearing the heavy rings around her ankles to keep time while she dances. In an episode of the Maranao epic, the princess is caught in the middle of the forest during an earthquake caused by the diwatas (or the guardian spirits) of the Kingdom of Bumbaran. The diwatas abducted the princess and entrapped her into a forest to teach the philandering Prince Bantugan a lesson. The falling trees during the earthquake (which the princess gracefully avoids) are represented by the bamboo poles arranged in a criss-crossed fashion and clacked together in a unique, syncopated rhythm. During the performance, the female lead dancer graciously steps in and out of the bamboo poles as she manipulates two elaborately designed fans called apir. Another female dancer represents the loyal slave of the princess who accompanies her throughout the ordeal. After a while, a male dancer, representing the legendary Prince Bantugan of the Darangen epic, performs his dance round and through the bamboo poles clacked together bearing a shield and a sword. The entrance of the male dancer symbolizes the arrival of Prince Bantugan who is determined to rescue the princess from the diwatas. Other dancers skillfully manipulate the apir fans, which represent the winds which prove to be auspicious. The dance steps require agile movement so that the dancer's feet won't be crushed by the moving bamboos. Meanwhile, the clacking bamboo poles represent the forces which the two characters had to overcome. The dance ends with the princess going home with the prince.

The only thing that I lament about the dance is the fact that the instruments providing the background music does not include pipe instruments or flutes which we know are present culturally speaking. I also think that the single-stringed guitar or kudyapi was employed as well. They could have added the element of emotions such as tenderness, sadness and other emotions that could add to the color of the dance canvass and break the monotony of hearing only percussive gongs and kulintangs. Surely our culture isn't remissed of emotional elements. I hope they try to improve on this aspect.
@dokkagaw25163 жыл бұрын
the kudyapi and flute were included in other dances of this company. for this piece, its composer, National Artist and foremost musicologist Dean Lucrecia Kasilag utilized the basic gamelan ensemble.
