My condolences for your loss. My story is similar to yours for my strat, my Dad got it some 20-25 years ago when he wanted to get into guitar but never really did. When he found out that I started getting interested in guitar he bought me an acoustic, and got the strat re-strung. I don’t have the acoustic anymore I sold it for an acoustic that I feel more comfortable, but the strat is still my go to. Along with the two guitars he gave me his old amp which probably costs some $100-$150 today. It’s a trash amp but it serves me well.

Humbuckers are generally built for gain though
@pbasswil Жыл бұрын
@@alistairdimmick2886 Humbuckers were invented _way_ back in the day in order to defeat single coil hum. The penchant for overdriving amps came later, when loud bands of the era started to get used to their quest-for-volume resulting in clipped guitar sounds. And even today, not everyone plays in rock/blues-derived styles; there's _plenty_ of music genres that use clean electric guitar - funk, latin, some country, folk, a lot of pop, jazz and a ton of non-cubby-holeable in-between styles. And they don't always use Fenders. Hey, listen to really early Stones & Beatles - the guitars aren't actually very over-driven, you can distinctly hear the natural tone of each guitar model.

@ricklewis58045 жыл бұрын
Ivy Symphony I think the ashtray bridge design is ugly. Looks unfinished.
@TheDmonet4 жыл бұрын
If you are playing music that doesn't need twang, then the single coil can be problematic. A hardtail strat or tele with a humbucker is a great rock guitar that challenges gibson SGs and les pauls, with better tuning stability and easily swappable parts. A strat with a trem and a humbucker isn't quite as thick and punchy, as another youtubers video shows. To me a telecaster is a just a shape. You can put whatever pickup you want in it. If you want twang you can put a tele pickup in a les paul and it will probably be 95% there. I never understood guitar purists who think that everything leo fender did was perfect from the get go. He had different designs when he went to g&L. If everyone stuck to this "that ain't a tele" or "that ain't a strat" stuff, Eddie Van Halen would have never been the innovator he was. Who told anyone you can't put a humbucker in a strat? F that.

@@TheDmonet I couldn't have said it any better. I love a hss & hh strat such more than a sss. I hate a single coil bridge...too trebly to me
@stell4rt4 жыл бұрын
@@TheDmonet I mostly agree but then, what's the point in buying a tele with hh if its purpose is just to replicate a gibson. Why don't you just buy a sg, les paul or any kind of guitar which is supposed to be the best in what it does. No other could ever achieve the sound a tele had with single coils in bridge position. If you remove that, then it's obvious that you better buy a strat because it has a better sound on neck pickups. I mean, I don't know... A tele without a single coil on bridge still has the shape of a tele but what's the point in buying one soundwise?
@TheDmonet4 жыл бұрын
@@stell4rt I already mentioned why: Scale length, stays in tune better, more easily swappable parts, different feel on the bridge (raised vs flat mount). Less expensive. If it sounds basically like a les paul but you don't like the gibson scale, don't like raised bridges, and want to be able to change a neck out without having to pay a luthier....those are many reasons why someone would choose a tele deluxe over a les paul. As for the strat neck pickup, just put the strat neck pickup in the tele. I think strat hardtails sound better than trems (as does the god of all dad rockers Joe Bonnamassa however you spell it), and a telecaster and strat hardtail are basically the same guitar with one more cutout on the strat. Again, the entire guitar traditionalist thing is one of the most annoying things I"ve ever experienced. "It just ain't no tele without no twang". Why do anyone care if someone wants a tele that doesn't twang? They should be forced to play a les paul. Again EVH should have put an end to the guitar traditionalist nonsense but some people cling to it.

Nothing can bite like a tele at one end. And then sound sweet and soulful at the other end. It's a hell of a guitar. And that's why it's still one of the holy trinity after all these years.

My very first was a 1974 Deluxe. Everybody at the time, 1980, poop pooped this instrument- not a LP "Dude". It had the Wide Range pups. They kept breaking the xil wire for some reason allot. But this cleared up and I loved it. One of my "best friends" stole it. Took years to figure it out. The guy he sold it to, famous Nasville session guy, told me. Of course he no longer had it. But I remember the feel and sound. Thx Leo, RIP.

Nice vid! One of the best back-to-back comparisons I've watched yet. I tend to like the Deluxe a bit more, but only when the neck pickups are involved. It absolutely sings! But I agree on the bridge. The Standard's bridge is much better. Up until this video, I was thinking double humbuckers was the way to go . . . but not so sure now. But that's what research is for, right! Thanks for the post. I really enjoyed it.

To me it sounds like the standard single coils are more rough, piercing and in your face while the humbuckers are more muffled, rounded off and mellow sounding. I would own both for different purposes.

Nothing sounds better than the neck pickup of the single coil tele. OMFG it's just like heaven.
@largemarge16035 жыл бұрын
Of your two samples == humbuck. Mine == '61, inherited from my Granpa in 1965. Maple neck as chunky as a baseball bat, sustain for miles. I finger-picked jazz for a half-century; I don't recall the last time I used the bridge pickup. True fact. If you play it, you instantly ask "Is this for sale?" My answer? "Maybe. Get back to me in a year or two..." Of course, as you might suspect, I said that same answer for several decades.

Nothing will take away the love of the clarity of my standard Telecaster. I did like the sound of your deluxe at 7:35 . But to my ears I like better the old Telecaster sound . Thanks for the awesome video's

I just bought a Custom too. The humbucker neck and single coil bridge provides a unique combination of classic 'twangy' tone and something new that is, for me, hard to describe but completely pleasing.

I have a partscaster Tele Custom with a Brandonwound modified wide range humbucker and a custom wound El Gordo single coil (wound by Michael Grey) in the bridge. The humbucker is splittable and sounds good split and very close to the original vintage wide range humbucker I own when played as a humbucker. Has a Squier Classic Vibe tele neck that has been refinished in satin nitro. Very versatile and fun to play!

I have the American Standard and I love it. I've had it over a year now and I can't find one thing I'd change. It's just about perfect. That being said, it doesn't generate the same tone at a double-humbucker and so I'm on the lookout for my favorite of those next (likely a PRS). I like your deluxe but I think if I were going for that tone I'd just go with a guitar that can make those noises AND be a rock machine.

james moscoso squire is pretty amazing! I own a 2001 squire standard telecaster that had a horrible beer brand logo on the top but I sanded it down and varnished it. Bought it in high school from a friend after I witnessed him throwing it down a flight of stairs and when I picked it up it was still in tune! Got it for $40, sold it twice but had to buy it back so I paid roughly like $120. It's never leaving my side again! It's my number 2 and my number 1 is a Gibson Les Paul studio Sweetwater usa exclusive, it's perfect!!! A work of art! The squire telecaster is a literal work horse! It can take a beating but it gets the job done!

I have an FSR tele Deluxe Thinline with the WRHB-shaped Fender humbuckers and those pickups weren't potted, either. Squealed like a banshee when played loud, just like you said. I took out the pickguard, set it face down on a table, and poured hot wax right into the pickup covers from the back until they were full (I also covered the polepiece holes with duct tape to stop leaking wax). Let it cool, then put it back together. Have had zero problems with microphonics since. No need to change pickups.

Hi Darrel, I'm a Strat guy but had to have some Telies. I started with the MIM Deluxe 72 loving the sound of Wide Range PUs with maple fretboard: sings brighter than your US Deluxe, but warmer than the US Standard, it's a keeper. Later on I got an AVRI 52 loving the "growl" of tone for some Stones riffs as well as raw Springsteen feeling in hand, but finally sold it because not playing it. Got a MIM Baja 60, even brighter than your Standard. But at the end of the day ... I'm a Strat guy 😎

With the utmost respect to Darrell ... check out some of the KZbin demos on the newer Vintera Tele Deluxes. Make sure you check out the 70s Deluxe with 2 humbuckers. Amazing range of tones! Yes ... it might be a bit Les Paul leaning in sound ... but the tones are awesome! I love this line of guitars. Just about to pull the trigger on one.
@therealtech8333 жыл бұрын
@@stephenlennartz3466 I happen to have one myself, a 70s tele Deluxe reissue. I can attest, those humbucking pickups very sweet clean or distorted. What I like best about them is if you attack the strings there's a lot of dynamic range that comes out of them, and when you want to pull back in the background easing up on the attack gives you a very soft sweet sound. When you put the overdrive on, and push the strings hard, you get a beautiful harmonic sound, it sings🎶

When I was about 6 or 7 years old, one of my Dads friends left a White Tele and a Twin reverb at our house after a local jam session. So this sat in our living room for almost a week before he came back to pick it up. Well, that was it....I knew I was staring at heaven, I was never the same after that. Now after almost 60 years I am fortunate to own about a half dozen Teles. My favorite is with a tele bridge and SD humbucker in the neck. Wired to get out of phase sound in middle position. That set up covers a lot of ground...all good!

Thank you very much for all your comparisons. It really helps to choose the right guitar, especially when you can only afford one. It has ti be perfect for me. Thanks again, great job.

Darrell, You make fine content. Keep it up. In this comparison video, it sounds like you are playing with your amp set up to overdrive with higher input volume - as we do, because it sounds great! As a telecaster owner, I know how to cause amp overdrive, but my interest in the humbucker tele is to hear its cleanest tones. The single coil tele mostly sounds clean. The humbucker version mostly does not, because its higher output is pushing the amp into overdrive. So we mostly do not hear the real clean tones of the HB tele, except for some bridge tones after the 7 minute mark. Perhaps it needed a different amp or amp gain setting for this comparison. I also feel that the Tone knob should be used on a Tele, but most reviewers don't touch it.

I love a Tele Standard but I have to have the old ashtray bridge with brass saddles. I know the six-saddle provides more accurate intonation but something about the brass both aesthetically and tonally just does it for me!

About 10 years ago, I sold a Fender Jazzmaster (made in Japan) which I bought back in '94 as a teenager. Just never liked the bridge on it, strings kept popping off or out of place. After much research I bought a Fender HSS Stratocaster. Classic black finish, with a white pickguard, and specifically bought a rosewood fretboard on it. That guitar played like a dream. Always in tune, and clear as a bell with great tones. While at the store ordering the HSS, I played a telecaster that almost made me change my order. The tele felt like a smooth driving tank. Was just a dream to play, but saw the price tag, and couldn't do it. Fast forward a few years, things were tight, and had to sell the strat. Didn't want to see it go, but didn't have a choice. That being said, probably for the best because had I bought the tele, I could have never brought myself to sell it. Life is better now. Still have a Harmony H80 that I bought used in '93. That has become a project guitar for sure, but still, a solid guitar for it's age and the love it's not always received. Rewired in new pots, and 3D printed some pieces that had gone missing over the years, still trucking along. That being said, going to save up for a tele in the future, just one of those examples of someone just getting it right. Love the sound, and feel. New to this channel but love the content, great work!

There’s something about the tone of the tele that is just amazing, having said that the single coil when sliding has a noise that Has always annoyed me and always felt it was because of how my guitars were cheaper models, the hum bucket has something missing but it also feels thicker like a raw photo with a wider range of options to work with in post.
