I DIY one 16' grange door I also had a big box store contractor did another 16' door. What a surprise, the price was the same, my parts was about the same as the out the door price by the contractor. The difference, mine was DIY type door where the torsion springs windup with a drill as a safety precaution, the contractor with the usual windup bars. Both doors were insulated with same R value, same style and steel backing, both with windows, both had existing openers, contractor didn't not charge sales tax. Installation for me was about a full day, going through the instructions and all the little parts, had to load up the new door on my truck from the big box store to my house and dispose the old door. Contractor brought in new door done withing 2 hours and haul away the old door. It was a new fun DIY experience but will have contractor do it from now on if the price the same. Now you know, check first your area may differ.

On Long Island, the uninsulated 8 x 7 door is $408 at Home Depot. Installed they get $1850 + $125 for the molding.

The saying goes "you get what you pay for". Quit being a hero and don't mess with things because you watched a video or two, read a manual and now think you are an expert. You are not an expert. Hire the professionals in anything you are not a professional in. We will all do the same and save ourselves a lawyer or insurance call because we "thought" we could do it and the door fell out onto the car or a person. Maybe whoever attempts this, you can now try to wire a whole house. There's a video for that too! Maybe or maybe not, you will get electrocuted or burn the house to the ground with your new door! Insurance will be void too. There is no insurance or warranty when you do it yourself. You Tube is great for many things but you better know your limits. I learnt the hard way with a diy project that went south and hopefully you can learn from me and take warning. Sorry, had to comment because this video was so ridiculous and somehow it came up on my feed.😂

It's so much easier to set your vertical track when you set your bottom section in the jam. That cuts out the step of bending nails over the sections as the tracks just hold them in place.

Good tutorial. In the following of your step by step installation to a fault, the placement of rear hanging brackets MUST be at the end of the roller track. Placing the rear spring closer to the front will cause the door to bind and cause damage to the steel cable, rear sheave and the associated mounting hardware. Fortunately for me, I noticed the binding and the referencing of instruction manual indicates the only variance allowable is to the vertical height of rear spring. The 4'' to 12'' inch vertical adjustment is to accommodate for low ceiling height. At 14.59, your attempt to lower the door indicates the exact spot of my binding problem. Dont forget to feed the secondary safety cable through the plastic eyelet, it's there to prevent possible binding and tangling with the primary steel lift cable.

I just installed the same door, couple things you missed. The safety cable should go through the black bushing on the pulley, not sure how important it is but the instructions show it.

Thank you for the response. Maybe I didn’t ask the question correctly I’m wondering if you measured from the floor to that horizontal track that which the door rides on how high off the ground is that track that runs horizontal with the roof? Does that make sense? Is it 7 feet off the ground or is it a little bit higher, thank you so much sorry to be such a pain in the ass

Thanks for the video just finished one of my doors. Two questions, the carriage bolt at 12:41, you mentioned it gets adjusted later when the spring is attached? What adjustment is required? I didn't adjust mine as there wasnt a slot to adjust the bolt. Second, does it matter which way the tension spring opening goes @16:37, opening towards down or top? Thank-you again
@findoutDIY
@findoutDIY 2 ай бұрын
The carriage bolt was installed just barely finger tight at 12:41. After the springs were installed I tightened the nut per the instructions. I think that was meant to allow the brackets to adjust a little as the springs were installed? I doubt it would really matter if you tightened the carriage bolt before installing the springs. As far as opening of the tension spring at 16:37, I don't recall it really mattering which way the hook at the end goes, up or down. These spring tensioners are kind of cheap (the torsion spring more commonly found with electric openers are much nice), but so far they have held up for a couple years with tenants using them to lift the door by hand.

Thanks, great video! When you built the frame for the door, did you make the opening 8'x7' and with that size did it work out perfectly for you?
@findoutDIY
@findoutDIY Жыл бұрын
I made the opening slightly smaller than the dimensions of the door, I believe it was 1/4" smaller from my memory. That way the panels have something to rest against as you construct the garage door panels

Great work. How did you finish off the header so that the 2x10’s and the plywood weren’t exposed?
@findoutDIY
@findoutDIY 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I did not finish out the inside of this garage/shed and I have seen other garages done with 2x10's in way of the garage door opening unfinished. I would probably have the sheet rock come to the edge of the 2x10s by adding another 2x4 in the wall to attach to. The 2x10s would still be showing, but have a more finished look.

I think your problem was that you started with the first panel too low, as the rubber list needs more room anyway, then your support bracket would have ended up higher.

I went in about 1/4" on the edges for the garage door. This allows the door to have something to lean against while it is being assembled. The instructions should call for how the exact dimensions you want to frame the opening. You can add weather stripping/jams later to the opening on the outside.

FYI everyone in the comments about having an "impact wrench", that's way more torque than you need. You can chuck in a socket driver into a drill and that's plenty of power. (my drill was too weak. Just to give you a heads up now that I've done it, Clopay makes a pretty good door, but they make it a lot harder with such poor directions. They compile 1 instruction book for 10 models, so you spend most of the time trying to decipher if the directions are for your model. Then when they don't drill the holes for the handles, that drives me up a wall. Or the fact I had to go out and buy the angle iron cutter to take 3 inches off the vertical rails for the low overhead installation. That's asinine. You cut the rails, you drill the holes, there's no excuse for their laziness. Like with the manual it wouldn't take 2 hours for them to go through and create a file for the correct model door, and decent illustrations.

Came here for this comment. The ISL is attached to the end stiles of the doors and it opens and closes into the slot of the tracks. His only saving grace is that he is using an opener and that will work as his lock. Doing the lock this way is something that would consider the door to be non-warranty if they were ever to present it to Customer Service.

Don’t like that spring system at all. The door will always lean to one side or the other and balance is horrible! Definitely get spring above the door if you can especially if you’re planning to install an opener.
@findoutDIY
@findoutDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I agree this spring system is inferior to the one that goes above the door. However, this system does work ok without an automatic opener. In this application I wanted the most economical option, but if I personally planned to live with this for years, I would want the above door spring.
