I like your great informational video, that is a technique I have not seen before. Years ago I had a south bend with chage gears and no TDI so I also used the carrraige stop but for indexing I soapstoned a mark on the lead screw and on the lead screw mount and when the marks lined up I engaged the half nut. I never had to stop the machine, I kept it running the whole time so it was still a fast threading procedure.

Thank you! I like you way as well. My machine cannot turn as slow as the Southbend which makes live timing difficult.

Well done, that is probably the first step to inventing the threading indicator, enjoyed.

Thank you. I haven't seen anyone show this method before.

That's a great solution. It works on both metric and imperial. What make is your spray can marking out blue, I've never seen that before......Cheers Tony

Thanks Tony. I am using Spanjaard Marking Blue. Regards.

This will be interesting to try on my lathe. It has an imperial thread screw, so when I do metric (it has built in change gears for both), I can't disengage the half nut. I thought it would be more then just whole turns of the head stock spindle for this to work. Only issue is the screw is 4TPI, and I still could engage it just enough to think it's timed properly. We shall see. If it's integer whole turns this could be quicker then reversing the lathe and waiting for the cutting tool to clear the work.

@@f.hababorbitz It will work on any thread pitch or leadscrew.

Gracias mi amigo.👍 Tu información a sido de mucha utilidad. Lo ideal es instalar un TDI. Veré la manera de conseguirlo.

My pleasure Alex. You can have one 3D printed. Mine is all plastic.

I'm wondering if this same method will work if cutting threads the way that I used to cut threads on my older full sized metal lathe? I used to do the thread cutting with my lathe running in reverse. It seems like your method would still work but I haven't tried it yet. I like cutting my threads with my lathe running in reverse because I don't have to stress out over being able to disengaging the feed lever at a specific point or risk crashing the cutting tool into the chuck. Right now I'm using a little cheapo Chinese mini lathe. It has a thread gauge on it but no matter how meticulous I am about engaging the feed lever at the right point, I still get cross threading. This is the second video I've watched on this way of cutting threads without a TDI. I'm going to have to give it a try.

No matter in which direction you run the lathe, this method will work. I also prefer to thread away from the chuck.
