Right! I'm in an orchestra and one of my friends had to switch to the viola because her hands were to cramped on the violin. But she likes to play the melodies and go faster so she isn't sure about staying with it. But I'm almost the opposite. I like to be in the background and help things move. Working on technique instead of speed. But I know I can't avoid playing fast forever, but that isn't really what I'm trying to do. Any advice on playing the viola? Or just better playing on either instrument? Sorry for rambling on.

Actually, I think it's really great that you and your friend can play BOTH violin and viola! It's super useful, not just for filling in for ensembles but also for being able to play what you want. Viola has some fast movements as well, so for that I recommend practicing slowly first and with metronome. Once you master the section at the slowest pace, you can turn your metronome up one or two ticks (depending on how your metronome works). Master that speed, then turn it up again. Keep repeating this cycle and eventually you will reach the fast speed that you want. This process may seem really tedious, but in the long run it has definitely saved me time, and you become more solid in your technique. Also for your friend, cramping is almost always due to tension in the hand/arm. Hopefully she's not squeezing too hard or playing in the wrong posture. Switching to viola may help some of that cramping but depending on what the root issue is, it may not solve the problem. There are some big guys who play violin with super big hands with no cramping. If she likes to play melodies then violin is probably a better fit for her, and hopefully the cramping issue can be solved in another way :)

The tone of viola is lower than the violin

A violin has an E string, and a viola has a C string. The viola is a bigger instrument than the violin, so it goes into deeper tones.
