this is a video of a fish packer taking on water and sinking during the 2014 roe herring fishery. The packer just makes it in to French Creek B.C. and is able to be pumped out and saved. Every one was fine and the boat didn't pack anymore fish but finished the season.

I am totally impressed. That boat was actively sinking, and she would have been very difficult to maneuver. She came in so smooth and evenly, you could believe it was all intentional. Super good job to the crew!

A couple of years ago my engine room filled up with water on my 36 ft. gillnetter , just between the Dundas Islands and Port Simpson B.C. ..my john Deere engine was completely under water ..my turbo for my air was above the rear of the engine ..so it gave my deck hand time to try to get it pumped out. After using a 5 gallon pail ..my deckhand had four other bilge pumps that I was too lazy to throw away ..all worked that day..my gillnetter came close to rolling over.. We got her pumped out and made it home under our own power ...yeah , those guys were lucky the bull works never gave way.

@Pee Tee No idea but a guess, the owners put the maintenance in to keep her going, until the wood in the hull decided it was time for replacement and they just didn't have the cash to effectively build a new boat out of her. They could get a loan to build a brand new boat from scratch but not to rebuild the old one.

The herring boat I worked had a live fish tank. Live fish would be brailed from the "catch net" into the tank, then placed live in pens upon returning to the marina. When we "pumped down" the live tank, our ass end was barely out of the water. Glad these folks saved the boat!

For boaters, what is the most likely cause of her taking on that much water? Second, I agree with those that praise the Captain, ground her, don't let her sink--but most likely the action would have been needed if preventive maintenance had been taken in the first place.
