Prince learned a lot from Stevie Wonder. If you ever get a chance, read about how he got his new contract from Motown (the biggest at the time) that gave him ownership of his publishing and master recordings that no artist at the label had at the time. He was 21 (right before "Talking Book" and set off his classis period). One thing he also fought for was ownership of the Motown label. He ended up with a percentage and when Berry Gordy wanted to sell, he had Somkey Robinson talk with him because part of his ownership terms were that he had to agree before he sale was made. Smokey recounted this in one of the many books about the rise & fall of Motown I've read. To be a fly on the wall when Prince and Stevie talked about the business of music...

"Slaves" that Prince didn't "free:" Margaret Cox [used for several non-released projects], Rosie Gaines [did not release album, instead promoted "Carmen Electra"], Tamar Davis [left her album unreleased and focused on "Bria Valente,"] Tony LeMans [forced to rerecord original album], Jill Jones [forced to stay under contract and not allowed to release music]. Any other well-known shenanigans that prove our hero usually looked out for his own interests and not other artists'?

Well, Prince was human with flaws you know, I don’t think he meant to hurt anyone, according Alan Leeds he said that WB never put money into PP records and he believes it was use as a Carrot to get prince to stay with WB. Rosie Gaines is a beautiful singer It’s shame that her album didn’t get released, she was about to release album and it was all ready was planned but WB shut down paisley park records like man that’s cold. Jill jones blames prince for her career not taking off and not letting her off her contract (which expired in 1993 in April because she had to waited out) Anyway, Jill should’ve blame herself because she choose to stay because trust him and was madly in love with him at same time she should’ve left and went to Motown where she grew up, But nope She choose stay and signed the contract she need take full responsibility for that.

Great video but with the Taylor Swift situation, her father own some stake with her last label Big Machine when her contract was up, instead of staying & keeping the stake, she signed with another label just for money & sold her stake of Big Machine Records. Taylor only bitched about it & played victim because she didn't like the person who bought it. That was the issue. Taylor finesse her fans to buy her re-recordings then put out a new album "Midnight" last year in November, then re-released a deluxe edition of "Midnight" this week and she putting out another re-recording in the summer, not to mention people spending money on her tour. Damn girl, your fans need to save up most of their on clothes, food & stuff. As for Frank Ocean, I wonder how fans feel on how he finesse them on seeing a half hearted performance at Coachella?

Prince, RIP, I can dig where you were coming from as a matter of principle, but hey man, you were worth $450 million dollars, you had the support of the record company to a huge degree, you were doing your thing and enjoying yourself, but, you don't have the kind of power that was given to you through your blood contract, and then spit in the eye that saw to it that you could do and live and perform in the manner which you had been accustomed to because of their power, you would never have risen to such heights without them. Man, you were farting higher than your ass, your mouth wrote a check that your ass was never gonna cash. I'm sorry for you as you were definitely one of the most talented performers of all time, but it cost your immortal soul. I say RIP, and I truly hope you found mercy after you left your body, but chances are you followed the same spirits you were following in the body, and found out you were being used, just like the ones in the body were using you, only now, you got to pay their price and I'm sure it ain't nice.

You're overblowing his influence. Prince may have drawn attention to how artists are treated but record contracts still fuck artists over. Record companies have always taken advantage of naive artists. Now streaming platforms do.There's still a long way to go until artists are fairly compensated.

michael jackson was one of the few artists to understand how the music industry worked & he beat them, michael owned his music & the label had to pay him, secondly because of the many publishings he owned, he was able to own half of the label he was signed to, michael was doing this when thriller came out. Prince was a musical genius but he wasn’t on the level michael was on. michael owned half of sony publishing from the time it started until his death, michael even gave a few artists their publishing back. Great video but somewhat misinformed

Michael was smart by one because of his record sales negotiated his label only temporarily owning anything in regards to his music with it immediately going back to him. Then buying the beetles & negotiating that so he would own half of sony’s publishing just so they could use beetles songs. Also he gave a few artists their masters back. Now I never said the video was false, prince wanted out of a bad contract sure, michael fought this battle when he negotiated thriller, prince arrogance made him ignore michael chess moves & though he fought respectfully it was all for himself. He went public only because he needed fan support for his negotiation tactics. I don’t compare michael & prince often but at least helped some artists & ultimately beat the labels. Prince never did
