As a Chinese, I would say there is No doubt USSR played positive role in the revolution and foundation of PRC. without USSR, who was the arch-enemy of USA/the West, China probably would not stand a great chance to be independent as of now (anyone who has doubts about my claim can look into the very treaty signed by Chang's government between US and China on 1945). But a CCP without Mao also would not stand a chance to set up PRC as of today, and Mao has probably Never been Moscow's favorite choice. I think this is exactly because of this reason (you may look into Chen Yun's Memoirs on CCP attitudes toward Russia), CCP ruling elites generally have a warm gesture towards current day Russia. Of course, I personally always believe that the bottom line is to be good neighbors respectful to each other no matter what happens. since both of us are gigantic countries + great powers.
