Benromach 15 Year Old Scotch Whisky Review. First fill Sherry & Ex-Bourbon matured. Even at 43% abv can this still be considered the Springbank of Speyside?

Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-91.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
92-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

Sneaky second comment. I've made this point on so many of my comments over the years: Whisky is a business and bottling at 40%-43% makes sense in many markets. I spend so much time in Spain and the default serve is a massive pour into a tumbler of ice. Rich businessmen polishing off a business lunch with a Lagavulin 16 at $20 euros a pour do not expect a cloudy mess in the glass. Spain has more restaurants, bars and all manner of drinking places than any other European country and high up in the world. That's a lot of chill-filtered whisky being sold. We all have a laugh at Cardhu 12 single malt but it's Spain's biggest selling single malt and Diageo's too - and Spain accounts for the lions share of that. It's 40%, coloured, chill-filtered and very popular. I mention Lagavulin 16 because maltheads always want it bottled at 46% but that would double the price and make it undrinkable in so many markets in the world. I made this point on a Ralfy recently. Macallan, the daddy of crazy single malt prices, along with Highland Park (not far behind) have traditionally been distilled to make blended whisky for Famous Grouse. You can combine all Highland Park and Macallan sales and they wont make a dent in the 40%, chill-filtered and coloured Famous Grouse which saw an uplift in sales last year to an astonishing £93,000,000. Single malt and blends exist in a bizarre, symbiotic, world. I admire Benromach for walking that fine line without compromising quality. WT

I'm very fond of Benromach. Always have been. You have two Benromach camps. The first is the core range, including the 15 which is bottled at 43% and the other camp is the high proof stuff. Actually, there's that third camp as well, which does all those interesting casks. Everyone wants the 10, 15 and 21 to be 46% but as others have said it's not a deal breaker. Old Macallan 18's and Glengoyne 21's were 43% and drank really well at that strength. I'm more comfortable with Benromach 10 at 43% than I am the 15 and 21 though. However, Benromach offer a great range if you want higher strength options. The 15 is a lovely whisky as it is. I love the fact that Benromach are a Speyside distillery because they are a thorn in the side of those that think Speyside whisky has to be certain kind of style. Good review Jeremy. I'm not ranting today and please feel free to review whatever you want. We don't always have to agree and I even enjoy a heated but respectful debate and difference of opinion. I come from a family of politics and politicians so arguing, even with those closest to me, is like water off a duck's back for me. We more often than not agree but when we don't please feel free to have a go. WT 😃

Spot on review! Thank You for mentioning “Ralfy effect”. Ralfy is not a Jesus Christ of whisky, so I really got tired for his rants and preaching lately (I mean 5 or so years. I’ve been following Ralfy from the start, learned many things from him but sorry to say, he just got old 😊). Really, not every whisky, that has an age statement, not chill filtered and has natural colour, is awesome. Maybe BENROMACH 10/15 would be better, ii would be bottled at 46 ABV and with no chill filtration. Maybe. I find BENROMACH 10/15 good enough without extra 3% ABV.

Sounds great. Only have their 2009 Batch 4 Cask Strength. Very mild smoke (and peat?). Nice spices. Very good bottle.

Nice review; I agree with a lot of your notes. I'm a big fan of the Benromach 15 despite the 43%. It's just delicious and satisfying. It doesn't hurt that the last couple bottles cost me $79 USD each.

Great review Jeremy. The 43% is not a deal breaker with Benromachs. Keeps them accessible and well priced while still tasting great. Hell, sometimes you just want something that drinks easier and there's nothing wrong with that.

The only Benromach I have tasted is the 10 yo, before the rebranding. Very nice whisky albeit only 43% ABV. Great value too. The new 10 yo is still reasonably priced in Bulgaria at about 54 CAD, but the new 15 yo is quite pricey - roughly 104 CAD by current exchange rates vs 64 CAD for the old version. I haven't tasted it, but still I have no doubts that it is very well made whisky. However, every time I look at it and see those measly 43% ABV I start thinking how much better it would have been at 46% ABV, non chill filtered. I almost never drink my whisky neat at bottle strength no matter how high or low it is. I play with water and try to find the best ABV for my taste. Cutting the alcohol content and chill filtering the whisky at bottling plant forces some of the flavor out and makes it unreachable for me. This and the price they ask for it have kept me away from it so far. Cheers!

It has been almost 4 years since I had a bottle, remember not liking it at first but it really grew on me. It is coming to the Swedish monopoly now in September for 899 SEK (roughly 110 CAD), think I will pick up a bottle again :)

Great review. It’s a lovely balance of peat and Sherry. Though I more often get the 10 year which Costco in AB sells for 60. It’s hard to justify 40-50 more for the 15 year.

Its a bonus if a 40-43% whisky has as much flavor as a 46%. Because our liver only can take so much alcohol.

Somehow haven't had the 15, but the other Benromach's I've tried have all been pleasant and good drinkers. Value, especially in Canada, is hard to beat. Its one of those quality single malts you can find under $100 at the LCBO and if they somehow began carrying the 15 that would probably be good value for product as well.

The LCBO will have the 15 on shelves soon, unfortunately it's coming in at $150

@@SippersSocialClub That will be nice but it'd be nicer if it was 20-30 dollars cheaper, but then again it wouldn't be the LCBO would it? Cheers for that info all the same.

Great review. I enjoyed watching this while sipping it. You gave some bang on tasting notes. I enjoy the 15 so much that it is a frequent pour from my shelf. I also agree with the Springbank "funk" suggestion. I was sure it was due to the worm tub condensers but alas, Benromach does not use worm tubs. Go figure.? The similarity is shockingly close which makes this a huge buy for me.

Springbank, Ledaig & Benromach are my 3 of my favourite whiskeys and at £70 is a great buy, value for money I would go Ledaig, and if I won the lottery then Springbank 😂 Great review by the way 👍

No...Springbank is the Benromach of Campbeltown, not the other way around. Let those things turn people off. It helps keep the flippers from turning a perfectly tasty whisky into another Sprkngbank.
@Whiskyfan519

It's nice but not a world beater in any way, too soft, too thin, barely peated. 84 maybe 85. That said for the price point for a 15 yr old speyside it's a bit of a deal. Based on price alone you can probably say 86. But the mouthfeel and the finish is a bit of a let down for me. You can't call something the springbank of anything if you're going to bottle at 43, use colour(this apparently is natural) and chill filter.
@SippersSocialClub
@SippersSocialClub 10 ай бұрын
I wouldn't call it soft, sure it's slightly thin on the finish, but it makes up for it with a good amount of flavour. If you take every scotch at 43% and line em up, id bet this one does the most for you. It's hard to compare anything to Springbank, but I'd argue the amount of peat, and the style of peat is close here. Cheers :)
