What I love most about her is how despite she being incredibly badass and sassy, she's still a fully fleshed out person, she's allowed to mourn Mr. Arrow, she's allowed to be defeated, vulnerable and in need of help and her being the *BOSS* isn't because of some Mary Sue-esque reason, we see her amazing skills and abilities and fully understand why she's the way she is. This movie and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were underrated masterpieces.

Captain Amelia was really inspiring to me as a kid because I think she was the first female character I'd seen that was a leader and everyone just accepted that she was the captain without her gender being a barrier. The pirates didn't turn against her because she was female, they just wanted the treasure.

Was this like the first movie you ever watched? Because I recall it happening quite a lot as a kid. Infact the only movie I can think of where the main character being a woman was an issue was Mulan, and even there they implied it was more that she had lied to them about it then her being a women. Though this was ancient China. Kida from Atlantis was a leader and no one even questioned it, the lady in the expedition was the second in command of the mercenaries. Honestly the more I think about it I dont recall their being any gender barrier for any of the other female characters either for that matter.

@@irontemplar6222 True - there were some movies and shows in the '80s and '90s that had it's share of strong and well-written female characters (though I wouldn't be surprised if there were some iffy-written ones too, but they could've been forgotten or being a less-strong female character didn't impact the story badly). My first thought of a female character like that is Eva Heinemann from Naoki Urasawa's Monster - she starts off failing the Beshdel Test, but grows into a stronger character later on.

I always loved that they weren't just roles. Amelia is badass and sassy, and she's also vulnerable, which shows a lot more true strength than most "strong" women are given. Doppler is dorky and clumsy but also capable in his own way, and though she found the dorky cute, Amelia really fell for him because of that capability and because he cares. They are fully fleshed out characters rather than flimsy cardboard cutouts.
