The last English born player to win the world cup wasn't in 1966 but in 2006 for Italy. His name Simone Perrotta whose parents were both Italian but Simone was born in Manchester in England and a far better player than Signor Charlton.

​@@garetcrossman6626It's a myth that the older balls were heavier back then, however, even though the FA specified that all balls much reach the dry weight of 410-450 grams or 0.9 of a pound, the balls were absorbant to moisture as they were made of leather and stitched which... by all means increases weight. The original comment is not wrong but missed the important part of why older balls were heavier.

Not just a great goal scorer, not just a scorer of great goals - he graced the the game of football. Anyone who hasn’t played with one of those heavy old footballs, especially when wet, will have trouble understanding quite how powerful his shot was. A 25 yard shot and still rising as it hit the net!

Among the greatest, he was the only real two-footed player. I've never seen in my life a player who could dribble and shoot wit either foot like him. Pelé and Rivera for example used their left foot when they were "forced" by the situation, but Sir Bobby's feet were interchangeable

Bobby Charlton used to take a tennis ball everywhere he went and did skills with it on his way to school. He was from very working class town called Ashington and it reminded me of the stories you hear about the great Brazilian players coming from the streets and practicing all day with battered footballs
