Well. According to IEA report, the world coal use to hit record high in 2024. Again. And, according to the same, Chinese coal demand is expected to reach a record 4.9 billion tons this year, fueled by the country's growing electricity needs and heavy reliance on coal-fired power plants. The renewables are not replacing anything, they have come on top of everything else.

Using coal to build the renewables being bought by the west to satisfy their net zero delusions. The Chinese are brilliant business people!

iwa, which you are referring to, also says that peak oil and coal us reached 2025. from 2026 they will start reducing theor imports in an accelerating fashion. and iea is notoriously optimistic for fossil fuels.

The "not replacing anything" is Berman's line, and he is right FOR THE MOMENT. But for not much longer. Two years, maybe.

@@alan2102X That was my own line, thank you. Of course I cannot know how many people have told the same.

@@LilA-zl6tf Berman is a prominent pundit in this space; hence "his line". Not that no one else can use it, only that he is easily the most recognizable one. In any case, the point was that it is correct FOR THE MOMENT, and for this moment only. Those days are rapidly drawing to a close. Sorry if that disappoints you. It will certainly disappoint Berman! He'll have to come up with a new schtick, after being humiliated on that one.

At COP29 China offered to increase the amount of money they pay into the fund for nations at serious risk from climate change (Island nations and low level land masses), but only if everyone else did so as well. The wealthy West declined. China has such a big carbon footprint, because, quite simply they make everything for the rest of the world. If we made our own stuff in the West it would be a completely different picture. China has also reforested an area greater than France and Belgium combined. China is doing tremendous things, despite all the negative western press. Their adoption and production of EVs is meteoric. They are leading in every respect, whereas in the west, we seem to be at the mercy of corrupt politicians and a nefarious fossil fuel industry. It is getting better, mainly because everyone can see China, amongst others, is making it work.

Absolutely correct. This comment should be read aloud on national media, nightly. Oh, just one thing, re China's "big carbon footprint": it isn't big. On a current per capita basis (the only reasonable way to compare countries) they do not have a big footprint at all. And on an HISTORICAL per-capita basis, their footprint is extremely small -- not even a rounding error of the sum of the developed countries. They have done MUCH MORE GOOD with much less expenditure (emissions and other) than anyone else, by far. WAY far.

20:35 "we are at over 500ppm CO2e" 20:40 "need ... down to 350ppm CO2e E.g. we are over the cliff edge already. UNEP 2024 gap report" 2023 we added 57.1Gt CO2e to the atmosphere 2024 Damien Carrington: 2024 is set to be a new record for emissions E.g. we are accelerating into the abyss 26 month average is (in a few days time) over 1.5C If it looks like failure, and acts like failure, we should do some magical thinking.
@alan2102X
@alan2102X Ай бұрын
It sure does look bad. And maybe mitigation action is too late. We don't know yet. But fossil fuel burning and CO2 emissions ARE in fact reaching their plateau -- for a few years, before they enter decline. We are not accelerating into the abyss; we're gliding to a stop. We'll see if that makes a diff. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Maybe we're fucked and abyss-bound no matter what. We'll find out, won't we?

Our biosphere does not have any interest in poverty, or lack thereof. Economic growth does not fit with overshoot. Perhaps China will delay our collapse. Or with some fortunate events, such as economic collapse, may allow us a higher survival rate for existing and future humans.

Sorry Sir David King, Labour under Starmer make regular commitments and row back on them. Look at the latest budget. Labour want to increase rail freight. The budget further reduced fuel duty. Not eve Royal Mail still uses mail trains. The cost of rail freight has soared. Electricity to railways has risen in price. The Labour govt has incentivised road transport. Words are cheap. Action speaks louder than words. The new PM describes environmental activists as 'Tree Huggers'.

Sir David King tells us that the state of Texas gets more than 50% of its electricity from wind farms, but what he fails to mention is that this frees up Texas to export more oil and natural gas to other countries, thus exporting its greenhouse gas emissions to other countries as well, but those emissions are nonetheless emitted. This is only one example of his naiveté shown in this video.

Sir David King thought are respectful about energy transition need, the progress made, but climate change remain a big challange. COP can not save the world from these challenges, and energy transition policies have acerbated even more the challenges. Sir David King like many others do not have clear understanding about high cost on renewable and on energy transition policies. The cost they talk is high, with burden payed from peoples. It is easy to make an energy transition on renewables when programs “Rob Peter to pay Paul”. These is practiced on renewable energy developement worldwide, and for these reason the economy on world is declining, and EUROPE is declining faster. My believe is that Sir David King must dig more not only on global polution from fossil fuels, but must understand better energy crisis and energy security for economic stability. If Sir David King disagree with my critiques, let crunch together the data based on the reality.

@@chapter4travels certainly you must know something, but there is not science on Degrowth/deindustrialization you have in mind. For example what about sustainability, managing all resources and developing technologies for all resources. The world has abundant resources including clean energies, so learn and harvest energy for sustainable economy.
