From one of the small boats that escorted him home, an eight year old boy in shorts and a school cap waved wide eyed with excitement to his hero yards away on a battered white ketch. Sir Francis looked across the brine, smiled into the boy s eyes and waved. In that moment, the boy was invested with courage. Truely a hero of the age. The adventures that courage found were not as momentous as his but the ability to face them was seeded in me that day.

Perfect video! I remember everything as long as it concerns his yacht. At that time I was around 15 years 11:34 old and had an immense interest in this adventure......And it was my start to a watersport life without end. So posthumously: thank you so much, Sir Francis.

Really enjoyed this! Chichester was a brave and intelligent man. Sir Francis reminds me of a line I once read in Shakespeare, it goes.....Our doubts are traitors and keep us from the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt. Chichester never feared to attempt and therein lies the measure of this man. Best wishes from the United States.

I don't think he'd be to pleased about being compared to someone very involved in the slave trade, or the massacre of Rathin.
@Antipodean3314 күн бұрын
@@waterboy8999 Different era also Drake wasn't happy with the slave trade, he did it when he worked his relatives ship, not his own ship. Anywat if Chichester wouldn't have been happy being compared to Drake who would he accept being knighted with the same sword that drake was knighted with nd he was honoured to be knighted with that sword. Drake was one of the greatest navigators known, he was also a man of tremendous courage and intellect. Also don't forget those escaped slaves that helped Drake attack the Spanish, not to mention many tribes who also joined him in his attacks on the Spanish. People who get all unhinged about Drake and his minimum dealings in slavery seem to forget this was 500 years ago, when the entire planet was engaged in slavery

Oh that brought back memories, I come from Plymouth and as a 12 year old I remember sitting up on the Hoe all day waiting for him to arrive and when he came into view a great cheer went up from the thousands gathered there. When he stepped ashore he wobbled a bit, unsteady on his feet after all that time at sea..remarkable achievment.

G'day, Yay Team ! In 1967 we got TV, when I was 6 years old... Some of the first TV News I can remember was Aerial Shots of Sir Francis coming & going into & out of Sydney Harbour...; the old English Knight in his Sailboat named after an Aeroplane, Gemini becoming Apollo, Harold Holt making a mess of Snorkelling in the Surf, and "...Now the News from The War..." We used to eat Dinner to that stuff. I count myself as an Aeroplane-Head, and I knew he'd flown a Gypsy Moth to Oz ; but the bit about beating Kingsford Smith across the Tasman with a Floatificated Gypsy-Moth via Norfolk & Lord Howe Islands was a New-ie On me ! Thankyou... Keep on keepin' on. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

t the time when Francis Chichester was sailing around the world, I was a young man sailing on the nearby Lake Jamno near the city of my birth, Koszalin. I read about his voyage, I dreamed that one day I would sail across the oceans in the same way. However, living in communist Poland, I realized that this was unrealistic. Today I live in "Polish" Chicago, I have my own yacht (Morgan 46), almost 200,000 nautical miles astern and I have crossed the Atlantic 15 times. Yes, I followed Chichester.
