If a woman doesn’t want to be kissed by a specific guy, she just has to stay away from the mistletoe when he’s around. It’s actually empowering, it gives her the opportunity to be kissed by the man of her choice and remain her outward modesty by arranging the situation.

I can see that viewpoint. I wouldn't want to be in a position where constant vigilance was a necessity, however, and I feel like it's also empowering for creeps. Lol.

@@Mr.H-Literature I don't think anyone would dare to kiss a women on a Christmas party based on some mistletoe these days. I was referring to this time of late middle ages to early modern times. Also there was only one mistletoe in the whole room in some corner, I don't think much vigilance was required not to stand there all the time.

Mr. Howard, which translation is this?
@Mr.H-Literature

Burton Raffel's. It's from 1970, an affordable version that's also very accessible to non-academic readers such as would be in a general U.S. high school class.

Do you like Brian Stone's translation? What do you think? Thanks for everythind, this is very helpful:)

I think I've read five translations of Gawain; Stone's was one of the better ones. I prefer Raffel's (maybe because I've been teaching it for a decade). For my purposes as a high school English teacher, it's more readable and engaging than the others. My goal is increase exposure to great literature, and so I'm not most interested in accuracy or poetry so much as readability. If they don't read it, it doesn't do them any good, and Raffel narrates action with speed and clarity, has crisp and engaging diction, and does an A+ job with the sexual tension between Gawain and the Lady. Folks want to read more. More accurate translations tend to lose the poetic elements as they go for the words that best replace the original poet's in terms of meaning. They also tend to keep obsolete and confusing sentence structures intact. More poetic translations sound beautiful, but the authors tend to make a lot of substitutions and reorganizations, that affect the meaning of the story. You have to place your translator on that spectrum. Raffel is on the more poetic side IMHO.

Kind sir, Your meal choices?!? Just read better and stay focused on the reality of the times. Also, no one ate b4 king NO ONE. You couldn't even move it was Beyonce's mute game all the time. Also, the movie The Green Knight by David Lowery karma is the only reason I'm watching your video. Also I went to North Western University and all this was my major. And I've been to every major spot. So watch the movie and stop doing things based on you've heard it's not good. But my last meal would be lobster crab every kind of meat that you can imagine beef lamb pork anything and then the salad bar from the restaurant Texas de Brazil and the Sebastian Brothers Steakhouse in Omaha Nebraska With A Slice of Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory and blackout cake from the original San Francisco bakery it came from and then champagne Port limoncello Earl Grey tea and a chai tea latte it would it's a double feast. But please do another video that's just short and concise

😁 thanks for the feedback. To be fair, I made this during COVID attempting to reach my regular English 12 classes on their level and get them interested in a story that 99% of them wouldn't have picked up otherwise. No pretentions to be some kind of master teaching college level material here, just a guy doing his level-best to help interpret a story and make it relatable to the average 17-18 year-old American high school student. Had no idea it would take off like this online. Best wishes to you for a happy new year.

Sorry I have to say this. The reading part is nice, but the analysis isn't professional and is filled with un-based personal thoughts. Could mislead those new learners...
@Mr.H-Literature

Certainly not attempting to mislead anyone. In my experience, differing opinions, new perspectives, or a healthy debate about literature shows that it remains vital. I don't pretend to be a PhD expert in the field, and I only made these to help my class through COVID. It's a wonder to me how these took off.
