Sir Ian McKellen Almost QUIT The Hobbit! | Gandalf Vs The Green Screen
Description:
Step into the digital realm of filmmaking with our latest KZbin Short, "Behind the Magic: Ian McKellen's Green Screen Battle in The Hobbit." Discover the emotional and technical challenges faced by Sir Ian McKellen, the iconic actor behind Gandalf, during the making of "The Hobbit" trilogy. Unlike the communal filming experience of the "Lord of the Rings" series, McKellen encountered a solitary struggle, acting alone against a green screen, guided only by photographs of his fellow cast members. This video delves into the profound impact that modern digital techniques have on actors, highlighting McKellen's dedication and resilience in overcoming these obstacles to bring Gandalf to life once more. Join us in exploring the unseen trials behind the cinematic magic and the incredible commitment of actors like McKellen to their craft.

The Hobbit movies fell short because they tried to take a 89,000 word book and stretch it out into 3 movies. The Fellowship of the Ring had almost twice as many words and was able to be portrayed in a single movie. The amount of bullshit they had to make up was ridiculous.
@liama2846
@liama2846 3 ай бұрын
@@twitch3334worth noting though that the first part of the Lord of the Rings book (known as the Fellowship of the Ring - remember LotR is one book according to Tolkien) does not correlate to the film called The Fellowship of the Ring. Massive chunks of the book are missed out and the end of the written format differs greatly to the film.

Its about portraying a realistic scale from a human to a dwarf, not sure if you know this but CGI is more expensive than hiring shorter actors And saying CGI isn't an art when there are CGI "artists" is a bit disrespectful dont you think?

@Samaru163
@Samaru163 20 күн бұрын
To make a long story short: Warner Bros didn't give Jackson and his crew enough prep time to build the necessary sets for the forced perspectives, so to cut corners, they relied heavily on CGI. Jackson also wanted to experiment with new advancements in technology and camera work.

They should have alternated the film style or something. Sometimes it would be a green screen, others it would be this practical effect they used in the original LOTR trilogy to circumvent this issue.

Recording a lonely green screen performance with a classically trained actor, is just like recording the cello section for a Hollywood soundtrack in a small studio instead of a large hall with the rest of a huge ensemble, they do it for complete creative control and the "larger than life" epicness is the payoff in the final composition/mix. Everyone has to imagine stuff at some point in those enormous productions :)

I often thought about how much money must have played almost the entire factor for actors like RDJ in the Marvel films. To be on set a great movie with great actors must be magic. With crazy good dialogue, not constant fake CGI effects post production. The fact that Sir Ian McKellen put up with another trilogy with even more of a souped up version of CGI and lonely work, I wouldn’t have blamed him one bit for not taking the role again. Are they fun to watch? Yes. Are the polished and more times than not come out looking great? Yes. But the constant green behind you, the 16 hour days, the hanging from cables and waiting half an hour for a 20 second motion and soundbite? Gotta be brutal. Yes, before the inevitable “ I don’t feel bad for millionaires” comments come in, I get it. But they got to where they were for a reason. They were living on scraps, at least most of them just to slowly build up their work in the industry. That takes pride and determination. They’re not just bots collecting a check. They shouldn’t be punished or treated like they don’t have legitimate gripes or issues just because they make money, especially when that money is based on being one of the best at something as highly competitive as acting. Hundreds of people at that same level compete for that role, and someone has to win it. They can complain all they want about how grueling the work, post production and insane hours after film they put into fan interaction, reporters and interviews to contractually promote the movie that they want to, in my opinion.

It's ridiculous how poorky executed the hobbit trilogy was. I really don't understand why though after how near perfect the lotr trilogy was. Was it a budgetary issue or laziness?
@MrTwizzy
@MrTwizzy 3 ай бұрын
It was not meant to be made by Peter Jackson in the first place. The Hobbit was supposed to be done by Guillermo del Toro. However after some pre production stuff went bad Toro gave up on the project and it was given to a reluctant Peter Jackson who then did as much as he could with as little time as he had. Not saying it couldn't have been better even with the unplanned director change but LOTR was made out of pure passion and had so much pre-production put in it. The Hobbit was made because money.
@danmoar94
@danmoar94 3 ай бұрын
@@MrTwizzy well yeah you can very easily tell it was a cash grab. I'd rather see a lotr remake trilogy by del toro. The set designs would be bonkers! Imagine how genuinely scary he'd make mordor and minas morgal. If the wraiths were so evil they made minas ithil utterly terrifying to behold, imagine how scary sauron's own realm must be. Much more scary than just clouds and lava, that's for sure! And in the jackson movie, minas morgal was just a bit green. It looked more like the emerald city from the wizard of oz than anything else.

I feel bad for PJ with all the flak he gets for The Hobbit. Poor guy was never wanting to make them in the first place, ended up getting thrust into the job out of necessity, had barely enough time to do any pre production, then had to deal with studio interference. With ample time and planning, I honestly believe he would have made something that really complimented his LOTR trilogy.
