No you don't understand. The first referendum was in 75 and was sold on the UK belonging to a trade block, not a political union. We've had a second referendum and we voted to leave. John Major didn't give a referendum on Maarstricht and now he's getting the result that he didn't want to hear in 92.

@anvior454 жыл бұрын
They voted leave, with a deal. A very good deal was actually what the pro-Brexit politicans promised. This good deal is not on the table. A WTO-rules deal, is a bad deal: The only worse deal might be if you trade with a non-WTO, like Somalia or North Korea. A no-deal brexit is not what the referendum was about.

Is this not the same man who pushed through the Maastricht treaty and caused civil war in his own party and in doing so contributed to his own downfall in 97. Where was his love of referendums then? Or is he suddenly a convert because the result doesn't suit him and he feels the masses should shuffle back to the ballot box so they can get it right this time. If he wants to speak so be it but the more he does the more opinions will become fixed because he does not practice what he is now happy to preach.

Even if we 'crash out' with no deal, if we unilaterally lower our tariffs we will be better off than we are right now. The common external tariff currently forces us to tax anything coming from outside the EEA, which raises living costs for everyone. John Major, the man who brought about Black Wednesday, has no economic credibility to speak in this way. 35% of Labour voters voted for Brexit, so it's hardly a split in the Tory party. Major's unbelievable arrogance comes through well in this video 4:26 "the Brexiteers are the last people in the world in any position to argue against those points I made this afternoon." Shows how open minded he is.

There is no democratic mandate or legitimacy for a second referendum at this time and certainly Major would not be calling for one if the result had suited his own agenda. It must not be forgotten that a democratically elected Government and Prime Minister successfully put though though parliament legislation for the referendum and it was put to the British people on the basis that "Our membership of the EU will be decided for a generation to come " and " It will be a straightforward in or out referendum." Those things were said in the hope, and the assumption, that the establishment's own view, i.e. that we should stay in the EU, could successfully be sold to the British electorate, and indeed £ 9.3million of public money was spent on propaganda in the expectation that the outcome would suit the likes of John Major. The fact that a majority of the public did not vote the way they were supposed to is no basis for a second referendum now. Calling a second referendum now would seriously erode the credibility of democracy in the UK at a time when the public are already seriously cynical about politics, and could will lead to civil unrest.

Deal with it Major. You are suggesting the destruction of democracy. Would you suggest opposition parties demand general election if they not happy with the result? Mr Major is patronising to suggest that those whom voted leave did so based on slogans, and not informed rational decisions based on the world around them. If that's the case, then it's very likely that those whom voted remain did so based on slogans and misinformation. But in John Major view, the remain voters are superior in believing slogans and misinformation.

Even if short or mid therm UK will be worse off, sometimes you must implement unpopular policies to be better off in long term. Take Poland, in the 90's the Chief of National Bank imposed very harsh fiscal policy and has become the most hated and attacked person in the country. Just couple of years later Poland has become one of the most successful economies in Europe. Today, this man is seen by many as savior of Poland and a national hero. Other eastern European countries rejected to implement those policies, their economies are struggling, because the politicians argued like John Major does. All politicians can only think about their next election... This in not what Brexit is about. It's a vision for a free and independent UK. It doesn't come for free and many are willing to pay the price, because in long term it's the only way to go.

Ever since we entered the common market our politicians have been allowing control to be leached away to Brussels. We are in the position we are, not only, but mainly because of our membership of the EU. It's good to see a repentant politician, now Mr Major wants to get the real message through to the people about the ramifications of Brexit, shame he didn't do that concerning Maastricht, no in we go boys, under one of the heaviest whipped votes in recent years of Westminster. I think Mr Major is as fearful of Brexit as Mr Blair because there just might be some extremely tough questions to answer later on. As for a second referendum Mr Blair's own facebook poll ended with 66% in favour of leaving, so keep on Johnny boy you're doing great for Brexit.

If Maastricht was a mistake, the Brexit Referendum was far worse. Leave won 51,89% to 48,11%, a difference of 3,78%. When you factor in those who didn't vote, a minuscule population determined the economic future of the UK.
@lisadiane100016 жыл бұрын
I thought that the Brexit vote brought out an overwhelming number of voters? So how can he state that only a third of the country voted for it? Seems disingenuous ! I really cant believe his assessment cause it seems to me he's manipulating how many voted for Brexit.
@TarDeisa6 жыл бұрын
What he says is true though 72% of the population voted, so only a little more then two thirds. 52% of which voted leave with those numbers you get abot 37% pro and about 63% con or undecided. But this number of pros may even be to high. Only 17.4 million brits voted leave and 16.1 voted stay. That combined is 33.5 million. Which means of the 46 million collected ballots another 11 million voted neither stay or leave. 17.4 million of the total british population of 65 million is only 26% or one fourth of the people who actually voted leave.
@maccagrabme6 жыл бұрын

This man and others need to remember their own words before the Brexit result and respect the voters and our democracy... Major was not voted by a majority to be PM so his logic is very selective indeed...What arrogance... On the Andrew Marr show in December 2015 John Major said “If we come out, we are out. That’s it. It’s not politically credible to go back and say we’ve reconsidered, or let’s have another referendum. If we vote to stay out, then we are out, and we will have to get on with it.” Nick Clegg at the Oxford Union said in 2015 “There will be some people who like those Japanese soldiers who continued fighting the last war because no-one had told them it had ended in some Pacific island, who will carry on arguing and arguing and arguing. The rest of us, will just move on. Carry on, with the rest of our lives.” As the 2016 votes were being counted and remain was being predicted to win the late (and I might add very nice chap on the many occasions I met him) Paddy Ashdown said on the BBC…“I will forgive no-one who does not accept the sovereign voice of the British people once it has spoken, whether it is by 1% or 20%.”

Then it appears you don't know one thing. Cromwell rebelled an autocratic leader who thought he could do what he wanted without interference from parliament, and triggered a civil war after a disastrous interference in Ireland. If Cromwell was alive today he'd take one look at May and recognise Enemy of the People #1, and then remember the regime he set up after the civil war crumbled 2 years after his death and everything returned to as it was before. History has many lessons. May I suggest you learn a few.

Lulu Saintly I'm afraid your a 1984 type of person who changes history because they don't like it. Ignore the poor as usual 👎

Michael Grey bollox that's the 1984 version of Cromwell, if you think ignoring the largest majority in a vote is going to end well, your nuts. It leads to right wing party's being elected and that's a fact, the cons are nothing to what could be there. History should be learnt from not changed, the result Gould we'll be a peasants revolt otherwise!

Stop it, now Mr Major, you KNOW that YOU are helping to divide the Country even more, accept the vote and if in the future we regret the vote, we can vote for a party that wants to join the EU and have another referendum that way. Stop the vote being implemented and there WILL be a lot of trouble and politicians will never be believed again!

why is it the both major and blair sound so burned out-- as if they smoked 80 a day every day since they were in office
