King Salomon was referred to as a Poet by his writings of Proverbs. (A beatiful poet, in my mind), so I don't understand the Church's resistance to include poetry as acceptable. I understand their dislike for distastefunl content but there are many poets that are sensitive to the soul and well being of others and refrain from negitive discriptive narrative. In my opinion poetry has a place in churches under holy, soulful perimeters. My statement isn't really any different then Sidney's questioning statements, they are just questioning statements. What stuck in my mind from Dr. Masson synopsis is that "poetry was for the unlearned " and many would take poetry to song so what a great learning tool for the many that were living in the rural plains with limited access to books and knowledge.

I love your lectures Dr Masson! However, I just wanted to let you know that this video appears to be mis-titled "Defense of Poesy" instead of "Defense of Poetry." I don't know if you can fix this or if this even helps your video on the algorithm, but I figured it was better to alert you about this.

Could Plato's Theory of Forms be applied to Sidney's interpretation of poetry? How do they differ?
@LitProf

Sidney seems to be writing against the Platonic view. He seems most indebted to Aristotle and Horace. He is a Renaissance man, giving credence to both knowledge AND action: "the highest end of the mistress knowledge, by the Greeks called architectonike [literally, "of or for a master builder"], which stands, as I think, in the knowledge of a man's self, in the ethic and politic consideration, with the end of well-doing, and not of well-knowing only".

@@LitProf you were talking about second broader category of poetry as sidney categorizes it, that it is not the subject matter proposed by the poet instead it is the nature of things that proposes itself to the poet, in explaining Sidney's use of word invention, so referenced Augustine and said just as Augustine implies the nature of nature (that you said is your own articulation of the gist of some concept of Augustine)

OMG Sidney was no puritan, was a friend of Giordano Bruno.... the most heretical guy in western history. I mean Bruno dedicated books to him.
@LitProf
@LitProf 5 ай бұрын
The standard take is that ‘All that we know about Sidney’s friends and political interests indicates that we should place him on the puritan wing of the Elizabethan church.’’ Katherine Duncan-Jones alleges that he was a crypto-Catholic, which seems rather dubious. If Sidney dedicated books to Bruno, you would have a case to make. But based on Bruno’s dedication you have proved nothing.
