Live, the voice was really something else. Nobody, not Aretha, not Ann Wilson, not Whitney Houston, not Cristina Aguilera, not anybody, had a voice as big as she did live. That is made clearer on her mariachi performances. Probably the biggest voice in rock history and probably the most beautiful as well.

I would argue Ann Wilson (admittedly, Nancy's voice isn't on the same level) is as big, as clear, and as spectacular, but that takes nothing away from the fact that Linda's voice is just stellar.

Linda Ronstadt was the Queen of 1970s Rock and Roll. Linda was the best selling solo female artist of that decade, and the first female solo artist to sell out arena concert tours. And Ronstadt was the first female solo artist to sell 5 platinum or multi platinum albums in a row, which she did in the 1970s.

I saw her in Central Park in 1974. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. My friend Rich and I got there 7 hours early and a couple hours later she came out with her band and did a soundcheck. She was wearing Daisy Duke blue jean shorts(and we're talking short-short). We were in Heaven hours before we got to listen to the full concert. Linda Ronstadt will always be the greatest singer in Rock and Roll. How such a powerful voice came out of her is what made her sooooo AWESOME!!!!!!

I was watching Don Kirchner's Rock Concert on TV on a Friday night in 1973. My high school years. They brought out Linda Ronstadt and I was like, wow, that girl is hot and sings great. First I had heard of her. Well the very next evening a friend and I went to see a Crosby and Nash concert. Well they trotted out Miss Linda Ronstadt as the warmup act. She wasn't on the ticket or listed on the billing. We were in the 13th row and about fainted. I don't know what songs she sang but of course they were great and she was so fricking hot.

I think it was 1967 and I was 14 when I heard "Different Drum" by The Stone Ponies on the radio. This VOICE -- who? -- was so different from other rock voices -- what I know now is it's Linda Ronstadt's control and the continuous breath support that give her such a smooth, powerful sound. But there's more -- from that base that she can go in all sorts of expressive directions. Here Linda rocks more than I've heard elsewhere: cutting the note, even growling, but never sounding harsh or out of tune. The combination of her gift, hard work, brilliant mind, guts ... a true phenomenon. Pop divas have specialized voices that can do amazing things in certain songs; Linda Ronstadt's is the voice that a huge variety of songs gravitated to because as long as she could sing -- who else was there!

Empowered is just one of those modern terms that is, well, annoying. I am a woman and not a particularly strong or empowered" one and I don't need other ones telling me I should be. Linda was a girl with a great voice who just sang and sang from the heart. You are right she just stood there and sang. She was emblematic of nothing but she could sing anything.
