Aside the creepiness im feeling an strong feeling of nostalgia, the 4S running iOS 6 and seeing early Siri talk to a Furby… also the iPhone’s plastic case man. Those are so nostalgic cuz they don’t make them like that anymore, they discontinued those…

I had a couple of these some years ago as a present for my kid. Man, you all got it right: these psyco devices either had assembling errors or just used to work randomly. They would operate even if you didn't provoke it. We thought maybe they were pushed by other toys' weight inside the toybox, then we kept them on a shift or a table, and started to yell things out of the blue. We got rid of them. You can't help to look at them like scary things. LMAO with the "doo daa dee" bullshit, haha!

They all did the same thing. That black lense above their eyes is a "motion" sensor that works by capturing the amount of light detected. If the amount of light is greater than x, then the furby will activate. The idea being that if you wave your hand, or walk in front of it, the shadow created would alter the light value enough to trigger a response. Considering this was a toy designed for children in 1998, that's pretty advanced stuff. The engineers even had the foresight to ensure the black plastic covering the light sensor filtered out infrared light so it couldn't be triggered accidently by TV remotes. When furbys first hit store shelves in 1998, they had a retail price of $35-$45. For comparison, newly released games for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 were $60-$100. In 2023, for the same price, you can buy something that uses the same batteries as a furby, but is 80% smaller and requires 1/100th of the power. The furby used a light detector to sense motion in 1998, in 2023 you get a true camera. Not only can the 2023 model detect motion using an actual camera, but it can send you alerts and stream live footage to your mobile device just about anywhere. Aside from detecting motion, devices in 2023 can also identify people using facial recognition. You can get all of that today, for the same price as a furby 25 years ago. Granted, it's probably gonna be a bit janky and probably send all the info back to a server in China, but it's possible. Anyway, the reason the furby would activate randomly is due to that light sensor. Incandescent bulbs were popular at the time. You can't notice it, but incandescents have a surge when they're first turned on, then dim as they warm up. Sometimes this change in light was enough to trigger the sensor. It could also be caused by a window. As sunlight enters through a window, there are two points during the day where the photo cell inside the furby could be triggered
