Exactly... in Portuguese from Portugal (the one being spooken here) you have that sound. In Brazilian Portuguese is /a/

In Brazilian Portuguese is [ɐ] and in European Portuguese is slightly higher approaching [ɜ]. You can think of it as the English schwa, when it's in a stressed word it's going to sound more like the Brazilian version as in "nut", but in "again" the first "a" is like the European one.
