I had no idea there were so many different lasers on the market for engraving. I think the rust removal was a cool trick. Great video as always.

Don't let AtomStack see this, but the Longer Ray5 we did a few weeks back might be the better choice.

This was a good machine to see if a laser really does blow rust off old metal. Wait for it :) 12:54

From Atomstack's site: "The high-density laser can easily cut 20mm thick wooden boards". Mmmmmm.

These lasers have been around for close to fifteen years. For most part they are not a good choice. Just a little less than 10 years ago I witnessed a demonstration put on be one of the laser cleaning companies at a California Bay Area refinery. As the have a large metalls and coating testing lab they were able to qualitative analyze the work.it was found that it did vaporize organic compounds and chemicals, think hydrocarbon residue. But what was left on the steel surface was identical to Hot Mill Scale, both in metallurgical and cohesiveness. You you plan on painting the surface of welding to it, it must be surface ground to remove the scale. If it is to be used as pipping of chemicals it must be Chem cleaned. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true it probably isn't so hot an idea. If you gained anything please give a a thumbs up. Thanks, Andy

Hey now there's some info. I looked for the "scale" but I'm thinking the Iron Oxide was vaporized with the "laser test". Chemically treated afterward would allow for paint etc. Just not sold on using lasers to remove rust. It does sound TOO good to be true. Thumbs up Andy :)
