Let's not forget, he was funnier than his contemporaries as well. It's not about the times, it's that Johnny was just that great. No one could save an unfortunate circumstance like Carson, king of improv.

Sis boom bah is one of my only clear memories of this show. Whoever wrote that joke probably had no idea how iconic it would be, and definitely had no idea that it would live on through KZbin. For all I know, it could have been a fairly common joke they heard on the street and recycled.

Either way, they did it perfectly. I think the funniest part was how they both just lost control for a while. I think if they kept laughing for another few minutes, the audience would have kept laughing along with them.

Carnac the Magnificent was the best interaction between Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon. thought the intire Tonight show. describe the sound a sheep makes when it explodes. is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard. and it was just as hilarious as when Johnny Carson said it the first time. it was always funny how Johnny Carson would try to keep from laughing though the Carnac the Magnificent routines. and it is was always great how the audience would go wild. when Ed would hand Johnny the last envelope.
