Even though he was working with talent at his own level, such as Barbra Streisand, he couldn't be bothered to appear in the recording studio at the same time as any of them. I'm a big fan of Maniac, both the original and remake, but I can understand Gene's reaction. It was pretty shocking and grotesque for it's time and it's much easier to appreciate now since we've had so many forgettable slasher movies come out since then. Freddy, Jason, Pinhead and Michael Myers have practically become mascots now, so overexposed that they've lost all their menace. Maniac stands out as a gritty and nasty look into the world of a much more plausible killer.
@walkerstark4564

Maniac is a great grindhouse slasher flick especially the scene Gene walked out on. Really good smart 2012 remake that is to the 1980 William Lustig original what The Beat That My Heart Skipped is to Fingers. Elijah Wood doesn't lfill Joe Spinell's shoes because the way it's shot he doesn;t have to, master stroke.
@AdamF90
@AdamF90 Жыл бұрын
The Maniac remake was really good, it’s actually really smart because it’s taking what could be considered very grungy low-brow 80s slasher aesthetic and then not only sets the remake in the art world, but the visuals themselves are really clean and then the technical achievement of having most of it POV. So it’s still wanton violence and typical slasher kills but makes it something different

to be fair even people who love original Maniac realize it's honestly not the best that genre has to offer. its cult status comes from how much it was censored (being seized from theatres by police in UK, fully blacked out movie poster in other parts of the world etc etc).

@@troyacree6705 the thing that bugs me is they talk about how unnaturally violent it was and disgusting but then praised Natural Born Killers which was savage regardless of its intent to shock viewers about society’s fascination with violence. That’s the only time I got mad and not just upset at a review of theirs. They were many things but hypocrites was very seldom one of the things. Loved the show but there were a handful of movies I disagreed with and I’ve never seen Maniac but the to make disparaging remarks on one film and call the other important for arts sake really upset their stance.

The only funny thing Chris Farley did that wasn't based on him being a large guy doing physical things, was his awkward interviewer character on SNL. Lorne Michaels said those skits represented Farley's true personality but sadly Farley obviously felt he had to be the fat man falling down for people to like him. John Belushi was his hero but Belushi's weight or size was rarely the joke and when it was, it was clever (ordering four whole chickens at Aretha Franklin's soul food restaurant). Likewise John Candy. Yes, some of the humour was around his size but it was always done with affection. Candy was a physical comedian but you never saw him do demeaning stuff like Farley was stuck with. The industry failed Chris Farley.

Black Sheep was TERRIBLE. I watched it because I thought Tommy Boy was funny, but there was NOTHING funny in Black Sheep.

Well, only because of his tragic death. But honestly, Farley really wasn't very funny. He did, though, give it everything he had which is laudable.

Chris Farley was much funnier than Belushi, Belushi and the original cast of SNL get way too much credit for it's success. @@NotMe-fx8lt

@@NotMe-fx8lt Yeah, I found him more annoying than funny. (I even feel the same about Robin Williams when he tried to do comedy). Those guys just never appealed to me. Both of them had huge hearts though.
