Wow, Gene was pretty angry in this episode! He tore Roger a new one in every disagreement. It seems to me that something was going on behind the scenes before they went into record that day.

Holy hell, yeah. He's not even mad at Ebert at the beginning, I don't think. He's just angry in general.

3:28 - Wouldn't She disqualify herself as a juror by visiting the judge? Answer: Yes but that age old excuse comes in: "But then there would be no movie."

Well you know what? If that movie is awful, then better that, than a very bad film like that movie.

@@DannyCosmos Right??? He had some bad reviews for sure. He didn’t like Christmas Vacation, Blade Runner, Beverly Hills Cop, What About Bob?, Unforgiven, The Terminator, & barely liked Rocky!

I know many won't agree with me on this, and I know Siskel was generally tougher to please than Ebert, but in the case of Balto, I agree with Siskel. I've detested Balto ever since I first saw it at 9 years old.

I'm surprised Roger Ebert liked Balto but Gene Siskel didn't! (and despite this being the 3rd and final animated film by Amblimation!)

Love the film. 👍 1..The Juror - crazy plot and dour performances by Demi and Alec. The chemistry is bad too. 👎👎 2..French Twist - a slapstick comedy about a love triangle involving a heterosexual couple and a lesbian; the dialogue is too French for its own good that I remember (during a 1996 French Film Festival that I attended in college) the cultural affairs minister shared about the eccentric yet universal (???) appeal of the film. Not for all tastes 👎 3. White Squall - The film that made me become a "film commenter" when it was screened during a religious retreat (!!!). The priest asked if any of us have seen the film before, and since I was the only one that raised a hand he made me talk about it in its entirety. Predictable plot and heavy-handed drama abound, it was a terrible experience - both the film viewing and the lecture 👎

I think that's the first time I've seen S & E dump on a foreign movie. Nico was passionately in love with Jim Morrison. She was devastated when he died.

I think generally they decided not to waste their air time on bad foreign movies--I remember they screened Mediterraneo, which won the 1991 Best Foreign Film Oscar, and after nothing had happened in the first hour they declared that it was a movie "utterly without merit," in Roger's words, had it turned off, and decided not to review it at all. But I guess the corruption involved in this movie being submitted over Les Mis compelled them to speak. But for the most part, I'm sure Sony or Disney or Buena Vista wanted them to stick to reviewing big-budget, mainstream fare, so if they had room to talk about a foreign film it may as well be one they'd recommend.

Why would they hate Balto? Is it because it has cliches?
@AGPfan
@AGPfan 2 ай бұрын
Ebert liked it, Siskel hated it. And I know you won't agree with me, but I'm with Siskel on that. Siskel hated it not just because it has an overabundance of cliches, but also because the script and tone are a complete mess, and the animation, detailed and fluid though it is, looks way too sketchy and dated for something from the 1990's (which is inexcusable, too, since Amblimation's two older movies had heavy shading in their animation, and yet had lower budgets). I hate it for those same reasons, in addition to the fact that it just isn't accurate at all, the questionable humor, and my personal opinion that several of the characters are unpleasantly designed. Those are just my opinions.
