I like that he insists it's not for children. I'm sure thousands of parents brought their children to this movie.

You’d have to be downright irresponsible to do that. Akira isn’t that broad enough of a movie to really encourage that. From the very beginning, it was obvious that it was a movie that was made for older audiences, especially in Japan, where the comic had been already serialized for a good couple of years.

@@RocStarr913 That's the hindsight talking, parents looked at the set of movies when they reached the door, saw the animated one and just walked in.

@@Bookspine5 I saw this in Chicago at the Music Box Theater, the same place Siskel and Ebert did. Probably the same day too. And I can tell you there weren't any children attending these shows. I was the youngest there, and I was in high school. The crowds that were there were sci-fi geeks in their 20s/30s and the niche anime fans familiar with the Marvel/Epic version of the manga, also mostly in their 20s/30s. The Streamline release to Akira was a limited release to art house theaters like the Music Box. It wasn't a wide release.

@@themadcat5288 Dude, no parents were just walking in to the theater because it was animated. First, it was a limited release in the US to art house/independent theaters. It made less than $500,000 in it's US release. Second, there was very little advertising done for the movie. So unless you were a sci fi geek or were reading the Marvel/Epic version of the manga, no one knew about it.

It sounds like Siskel and Ebert both recommended it. They would not have even bothered to put it on a “home video pick of the week” if they didn’t. It was a supplemental segment of the program.

No idea. There is a movie review of Ghost in the Shell on Roger Ebert's website he wrote. Gave it 4 out of 5 stars. He spends like a 1/3 of the review talking about Japanese Work and Cross-dressing Culture.

Funny how they refer to the technology and gore, but don't even hint at the spiritual aspect. Missed opportunity, be interesting considering Ebert's late-life interest in the movie version of Watchmen and the character of Dr.Manhattan.

He did watch it and he did like it, on one of the box arts it has him quoted saying “thumbs up” which from him means he really liked it

He must have to describe it as perfectly as "...an animated version of Mad Max". Just like how "Ghost in the Shell" is an animated version of "Star Wars" or "Grave of the Fireflies" is an animated version of "The Sound of Music".
