Coincidentally it's actually called "bleeding artifacts", "datamoshing" when deliberate, or simply "glitch". The artifacts plagued videos using early DivX and XviD compression algorithms of the 2000s when everything was compressed very hard to transfer over usually still pretty slow internet connections. I remember it well from individually downloaded videos of the era.

I absolutely LOVE both films! From Beyond and Reanimator were such fun to watch (censored for TV only - thanks to my Catholic mom and dad!) every Halloween here in Windsor Ontario. We used to have "Shocktoberfest" on TV in Detroit during the mid-1980's and thanks to being in Canada, across the river from Detroit, my brother and I used to look so forward to seeing these great, classic horror films on TV - which were the only ways he and I were allowed to watch them when we were younger....

brilliant movie...and they missed the point of the 'kinky sex'--it's that obsession with pushing the boundaries of sensation that drove Praetorius to risk it all to 'feel more'. Which is why the whips and chains stuff was added. Also why the repressed woman started wanting to get kinky and turned the machine on even after it she knew it was bad news, the way drug experimenters know meth and coke are dangerous, but do it anyway---that stuff was in there for a reason a truly brilliant little monster movie and one of my favs

It’s also a thirst for power. Reanimator touched on the same theme of lust for control with Dr Hill.
@StopFear3 жыл бұрын
Are we sure we know which of the two kinky sex scenes Siskel and Ebert are referring to. There is the one where Dr.Praetorius tears off her dress and does the thing with his elongated hand, and then there is a separate scene when she puts in the bdsm outfit she found in the room. It’s not clear from the video which one they mean. I think the first one, where the monster tries to “kiss her” with its hand down is a good and necessary scene. Maybe the bdsm scene was the one they meant as the less necessary. I liked it but since it was not well developed I thought perhaps it was only added to show the viewers more of her body.
@StopFear3 жыл бұрын
Well, the part about the drug you mentioned was directly touched on by the policeman who cooked them dinner when he said “I saw this junkie behavior behold in the streets” or something. We don’t actually know that the doctor chick was repressed. IMO it’s entirely wrong. She became like that after the monster tried to eat her. He was the masochist who couldn’t get it up. It was just what was awakened with her from being exposed to the mind of Praetorius (he is merged with some other evil thing) , while the character of Jeffrey Combs had his own gland pop out and take him over making him sick the brains out. When she bit it off doing him a favor he snapped back into reality. That’s why when the assistant’s mind gets absorbed they have a contest of wills like in the other movie, Scanners. So the chick doctor only got a part of Praetorius mind from the initial exposure. Maybe that’s why it was emphasized she started to gradually laugh like he did.

Always makes me sad to hear Ebert say Gordon might have a big future ahead of him for genre films like this... because they did NOT continue doing these crazy adaptations of Lovecraft stories. Re-Animator, From Beyond, and I think one more many years later (can't remember the name. It was about fishmonster in a small town... but I haven't seen it yet) were the only ones he did. I would have LOVED to see more. Maybe even with the same cast members returning over and over. Combs and Crampton mainly. Would have loved to see In The Mountains Of Madness by Stuart Gordon. Can you imagine?

The concept of this film is great. I love the first scene where they turn on the resonator and see what was once invisible come to life. Comparing it to Re-Animator, it is smaller in scope (sets, characters) so it seems a bit cheap and claustrophobic. But the practical effects are more impressive than Herbert West's adventure.

It's funny, many on here seem to be shocked about ol' S & E giving From Beyond praise but ya gotta remember Siskle, Ebert and Gordon were all from Chicago. Not to mention, Gordon was a bit of a Chicago semi-legend via him running the Organic Theatre. I'm not accusing them of favoritism, but let's just say if From Beyond was directed by a unknown California director, they might not be so generous. For the record: I love From Beyond and Re-Animator is in my top 3 horror films ever. And Gordon is one of the most original/imaginative directors to come out of the 80s horror boom (second only to Cronenberg). But I definitely feel there's a "our guy" bias to this review. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that S&E notoriously disliked and, frankly, misunderstood horror films (witness their hysterical--in every sense of the word--review of The Hitcher, where they bash the film for doing it's job and being effective), despite once in a blue moon getting it right, as with this, Halloween, and a (very) few others.

There was more too it than showing off Barbara Crampton. The idea is that Crampton despite seeing the horrors of the machine twice over has grown addicted to it. That's the surface of it, however, it's also changing her in other ways. She put those on, because she wanted to imagine what it was like to be one of the women that Pretorius committed bondage with. On top of being just as obsessed and perverted as Pretorious himself. The only thing keeping her from going too far was seeing how horrible he is.

@KennyThaKilla You do realize when it comes to opinion there is no right or wrong? If Siskel thought it was better than Aliens than for him it is better than Aliens. We aren't dealing in facts here, but opinions. Aliens is now generally regarded to be a classic, but that still doesn't make it a fact that it is a masterpiece. And check your hearing Ebert didn't say From Beyond stunk all the way around. He kind of liked it, just not enough to recommend it.
