This is the movie that Ebert said in his print review the following: "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. You got me for a second. I agree. This review is way more entertaining than any moment in the movie
As much as I enjoyed when they gushed about films that they loved I found it way more entertaining to hear them flat out destroy a film they hated. Siskel and Ebert would make a film roasting into must see television and when I first watched the review for North and heard Siskel and Ebert’s outward disdain and disgust towards it I said to myself if it’s that bad of a film then I want no part of it.
@spencerhensley5495 Жыл бұрын
I genuinely think if Rob Reiner had not directed this and it had a great cast I think they still would have disliked it but not to this extent. Siskel even said whenever huge talent was involved in a bad film it was always more fun and easier to destroy. And that makes sense because Reiner was too talented not to know this movie wouldn’t work.

Siskel and Ebert always tore apart bad movies with big talent in them. In this case you had a great ensemble cast and Rob Reiner’s directorial career was on fire for about 10 years plus as mentioned Elijah Wood was proving to be a very good actor. Had this not been as big I’m sure they would have disliked it but not to this degree. They were just extremely upset because everyone involved in this project the cast and Reiner was f capable of doing so much better so they were too smart and talented to know this wasn’t a good project. I don’t hate the movie and wouldn’t even put it in my top worst of all time list but it’s definitely a disappointment when you consider all of the talent in front of and behind the camera and the saddest thing is Rob Reiner went from being an A+ director to now a D grade director whose maybe had two good films since.

The funny thing (and I use that term very loosely) is that Rob Reiner actually had hopes for North to be his own equivalent to The Wizard Of Oz, even though he already made such a movie several years earlier with The Princess Bride. In an interview with Archive of American Television back in 2009, he said about North: "I made this little fable, and people got so mad at me, because, you know, I had done When Harry Met Sally..., and Misery, and A Few Good Men, and everybody said 'Oh, it should be a more important kind of movie.' I said, 'Why? Why can't you just make a little slice of a fable or something?' Anyway, I loved doing it, and some of the best jokes I ever had in a movie, are in that movie." @@jbvader721I love Marriage Story. Haven’t seen Lost in Translation in forever and haven’t seen that other film need to check it out. Of course now Johansson as an adult said she loved working on the film but to be directed by Rob Reiner as bad as the movie was and have John Ritter and Faith Ford from Murphy Brown and even Elijah Wood play a potential adopted brother I can see why she loved it at that young age.

The look of pure, seething hatred on Ebert's face we see in that split second he's looking at the screen is priceless.

I remember seeing this movie for a friends birthday party when I was 11. I can remember sitting in the theater thinking "this is stupid" I wasn't until I saw this review on TV the next weekend that I actually understood why I thought it was so stupid. I agreed with Roger then and I still do now even after almost 20 years.

North is bad but not the worst of 94, not even the worst of SUMMER’94; Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a more depressing time at the movies and I swear it had fewer laughs!

I rented this as a kid cuz I really wanted to see it, and I remember liking it but I also don't remember anything else about the film. Based on that these two gentlemen were probably correct.

I hated this movie as much as any movie we ever reviewed in the 19 years we've been doing this show. - that sums it up pretty well.

@fortynights1513 he said that's the worst film ever but North was the worst reviewed on the show. Pretty sure Grave was before there was a TV show.
@fortynights15138 күн бұрын
@@christianlorreI Spit on Your Grave was a 1978 film, so it would’ve been in the PBS days before commercial syndication. That said I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t bother to review it on their show at the time, and that North was the worst they did choose to review.

The person who wrote the screenplay followed Ebert into a restroom at a Chicago restaurant and then told him how much he hated his sweater. And then they had a good laugh about it.

Nick Copeland Agreed. I mean, Rob Reiner has probably made too many great films for me to completely hate him, but man this film is just..... it reaches beyond the lowest common denominator in execution
@nickcopeland69159 жыл бұрын
Ben Wasserman Yeah. Thankfully, everyone involved recovered. Reiner's next film was a huge hit and the actors and actresses had more successful careers. Like Ebert said, this film was a very unfortunate aberration in their careers.

What's almost as shocking as having the director being Rob Reiner, was have the writer and producer being Alan Zweibel. For those who don't remember, he was one of the lead writers in the early and funniest days of SNL.

@@spencer10182 All these unfunny jokes, talent and stereotypes costed 40 million dollars Spencer. Final total? A measly worldwide 12 million. Couldn't gross half of its budget even Dont forget 1994 gave us The Shawshank Redemption, Mask, Dumb And Dumber, The Lion King, Speed, The Little Rascals movie and Pulp Fiction which contained a better use of Bruce Willis. The main problem that I have with just about every critical review of this movie is this: the fact that the whole movie is happening in a little frustrated kid's mind! And, when you take that simple fact into consideration, the movie makes more sense and for me it works on that level.
@IamConnorMacLeod6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense for a boy to think of jokes like the burren area being Mrs. Ho's uterus. Or the whole Texan scene. or the entire movie. .... Nope. No excuse. That's like saying only kids would like this movie (which they didn't, and likely never will).

Well Alan Zwibel the writer was humiliated. Look up his article Roger and Me it’s pretty funny and explains his reaction to Ebert’s review. Meanwhile Reiner defended the movie and said it had some of his best jokes in it which I think is crap considering every other movie the guy made before was good and he said he thought Ebert was expecting a more important type of movie from him. Not more important Rob, something decent which you proved you were more than capable of making.
