I think Ebert was right to mention My Neighbour Totoro during the review because it was a far superior film compared to Once Upon A Forest.

Alot of '80s and '90's western animated films pale in comparison to studio gibli films.

While I agree this film is a bit on the forgettable side, at least it doesn't straight up deem all humans as animal hating psychopaths like what "Ferngully" did. It showed that some humans do not care for nature but it also acknowledges humans who want to help make things right. So you could argue that this film actually was ahead of the game compared to other environmental material at the time. So it gets message right by not being one sided, but where this movie falters is with it's three main characters who don't really go through any major development through this movie. Maybe if the film was about 20 minutes longer, they could probably flesh them out better.

I absolutely do not agree with Gene's view on this movie. This movie is absolutely dazzling. I had it on VHS for number of years but now I have it on DVD. I think the songs are very memorable. The music score at the beginning is really beautiful sounding and when Russell andAbigail and Edgar are operating the flapper wing of a thing, or whatever it's called, hope I spelled it correctly. The song He's Back is full of such fun energy. Please Wake Up is super and beautiful sounding. And words cannot describe how beautiful the song is that takes place at the end credits. So if I were to be on a movie critic show, I would vote thumbs way on this movie Once Upon A Forest

Ah jeez, children don't need to be THAT sheltered. Look, not every childrens story needs to be chippy, children are human, too, and when grown-ups can enjoy a drama, so can children.

2:37 Okay, a lot of what he's saying makes sense, but to say the background drawings are bad!? For real?! Some of the animation is a bit choppy at times, but the still images in the background are part of what made this movie visually appealing! Does he want to suggest the score is bad too or was he afraid of dissing the great James Horner?

Probably because it came out around the same time as the re-release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs "!

Siskel and Ebert does't seem and I don't know if they ever got the reason, si so that the kids can get to have some sort of adventure that they wouldn't get if both parents are in the picture. Now only imagine what would have been like if they had both lived to see Frozen. Roger Ebert died in 2013 just months before the release of Frozen. Gene Siskel died in 1999. It would make for a boring animated movie if both parents are alive, and one being dead or one or both dies in the movie.

@woooudo Could be, but that is the problem with voicing a Disney parent, as either your character is kill off, or a lot of the times, your character will survive but then be on the sidelines for most of the story, where you character barely has much screen time left. Look at Tarzan and Frozen, both parents are killed in the movie, and in the animated Cinderella, both of her parents, her mother and father are dead in the storybook opening.

I actually agree with both of them. While I DID enjoy the movie as a kid, I do not think it has aged that well now that I am in my adulthood. The characters ARE boring and the plot is very depressing. Furthermore, the musical numbers (there are only TWO of them) are nothing to write home about. Michael Crawford's singing is usually hit or miss, but sadly, it is the latter in this film. The ending is also very anticlimactic and even as a kid, I felt let down by it. "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest" is a vastly superior "save-the-environment" animated feature film. The animation, characters, and musical numbers are just executed much better in comparison. Give me that one over "Once Upon a Forest" any day.

Why the out of nowhere Political Correctness jab from Ebert? The movie sucks but thats an incredibly weird point to make about it.
