The villains just don't work in this film, everything else is lovely, Okinawa is a beautiful setting. The bad guys were just 2 dimensional mustache twirlers. What if there was a big Karate tournament in Okinawa, Daniel can get his fights in, you can have him be the outsider, some tensions because he's a gaijin and Miyagi gets some blowback for training the gaijin. All that's ok, but make it more of a character drama with growth. Daniel wouldn't even need to win the tournament, just be really good to earn respect. Sad how they just lost Daniel's Mom as a character and Elizabeth Shue's loss needed to be much better explained for the sake of the 1st film's integrity and for the romance with the Japanese girl to work better. Siskel and Ebert graded this one about right.

How much more of the love story could the movie have? It seemed to be an even bigger part of the movie than the love story with Ali in part 1. The movie wasn't going to be a total drama with no fighting. It's a karate movie. You watch the scenes in this movie and you'd be hard-pressed to find an actual bad scene. I’m genuinely confused: this movie is actually only really ABOUT Myagi. It takes us into his world, we meet characters that are new, a beautiful setting with great effects, and a deep connection that develops between Mr. Myagi and Daniel as his father passes away - creating symmetry with the characters since both have lost their fathers. This movie is very well fleshed out.
@adamrobinette68324 ай бұрын
I thought this was a very good review of this movie and pretty spot on. Not 'bad' at all. But so much of the interpersonal relationship development was lost. Which was a shame, because everyone played their roles so well. I think the movie could have also done with Sato and Chozen showing getting a bit more at odds as the movie went on to lead to the storm scene, rather than just at the bar. Like Chozen and his men trashed Miyagi's Dad's dojo, which was also Sato's master. There should have been a scene between Sato and Chozen about that, to suggest Sato felt Chozen was creating too much collateral damage and not listening to Sato about how to draw Mr. Miyagi out. It still had heart though.

@@afranks8566 ill eat crow if im wrong. Sato was clearly smarter than Kreese and Chozen seemed smarter than Johnny. In fact, in Cobra Kai Chozen is definitely smarter than Johnny. For comedy they made Johnny a little dumber than how he was portrayed in the first KK movie. Yet Siskel refers to Sato and Chozen, as dumb, boring, and ridiculous. The only thing i can think of is that Sato and Chozen are Asian.
@markv1274 Жыл бұрын
@@jfearless3420 No, Chozen was an idiot. He cheats people with rigged scales at the market, then when he's busted by Daniel, he makes out like it's Daniel's fault. Then he loses a heap of his uncle's money at the icebreaking debacle. Chozen was an embarrassment to his family. COBRA KAI is irrelevant to Siskel's review. It didn't exist in the '80s. Siskel was reviewing the characters based on how they appeared in THE KARATE KID PART II. If Siskel had a problem with Japanese and Asian folks generally, he wouldn't have spoken in such glowing terms about the performance of Pat Morita as Mister Miyagi. As for Siskel dismissing Morita's chances at an Oscar, that was, I believe, based on the fact that Morita was essentially a comedy guy for many years. It was difficult for Siskel to imagine Morita the comedian, as good as Morita was in a largely serious role in THE KARATE KID, being nominated for an Oscar. Yet Morita, playing against type, was indeed nominated for an Oscar. He didn't win, yet the bigger reward was that Mister Miyagi is one of the most beloved characters in the history of cinema. Winning awards is one thing, yet the biggest accolade is standing the test of time. Even if Siskel didn't think that Morita was Oscar worthy, he definitely saw something in the character as played by Morita.
