WHAT NO SAMPLE CLEARANCE!!!!
Yes, in this episode Barry breaks down how to sample dusty sampled material and turn them into your own, therefore negating any Sample clearance issues.
The key to this is something Barry has been banging on about for quite some time now... MIDI EXTRACTION
In other words turning audio into midi information and then applying these midi notes to realistic sampled plug in instruments. (A High quality download of the finished track 'C is for Charlie' is available to purchase here on Barrys Bandcamp page)
In this tutorial we find Barry in the land of Ableton Live. A plentiful land of unlimited opportunities for the adventurous musical explorers out there.
Barry starts off with the Drums and in this instance enrols the services of obscure late 60s US latin funk outfit, The Sillouettes with their stonkingly phat Drum Break, Fonky First. Barry fonky firstly extracts the Drums to MIDI in Ableton and then applies the results to a rather dusty sounding ADDICTIVE DRUMS nu funk drum kit. We are invited to compare the Addictive drums with the original and it is clear to hear the new drums fit over The Sillouettes break like a rather groovy glove.
Next up, time for some music.
Barry pulls out a rather crusty 45 by Jazz funk saxy man David Sanborn and sets his targets on the piano intro with its trilley Charlie Brown style chord structure.
Once recorded into Ableton, Barry proceeds to chop every single chord and note, spreading them across his keyboard ready for some serious reinterpretation.
With 12 bars of chopped up piano sequence under his belt it is time to extract!
Convert harmony to midi is the key to this and in a matter of seconds we are presented with Abletons results and they aren't too shabby.
As with most midi extraction there is a fair bit of tidying up to be done as the results are rarely perfect. This is the bit that takes time but Barry lets us into a lesser known extraction secret that can help provide much more in the way of extraction options. By pitching the audio to be extracted up and down slightly in pitch you can produce radically differing results. By then combining all the most successfully extracted results you can build up lots of intricate and varied sequences.
So with the main piano sample in the bag Barry builds up the track, one bar at a time, with a selection of extra sampled instruments, most notably a full horn section courtesy of Native Instruments Session Horns Pro.
Barry doesn't pretend that this was a short process BUT it was a heck of a lot of fun as you have total control to create your very own original authentic sample sounding groove.
Finally Barry takes us over to Pro Tools where he gives it a quick mix, attempting to give it a more vintage 60's/70's sound. Admittedly this is where Barry feels slightly defeated as he doesn't quite get there but this is something Barry is constantly researching and working on. To hear a true master of the authentic sounding plug in game you have to check out Alex Ball Music, a total genius!!!
/ @alexballmusic
So there you have it. A brand new and quite revolutionary Hip Hop beat making technique for you to try out at home. In fact if you want to have a go at making a beat like this then Barry would love to hear some of your efforts. Feel free to post any links in the descriptions (please no links to anything but sample extracted beats)
Also, it goes without saying that if you have any questions arising from this Barrys school of Beats, then leave a comment and Barry will do his best to respond. Be patient though as Barry and Mrs Beats have just had a baby!!!
HAPPY BEAT MAKING X

This instantly added some much needed swing to my drum programming. Editors note: Barry I got the full blown version of Ableton and used this method. Didn't use it for drums but I dropped a music loop into an Ableton midi track and it correctly guessed the melody. I dropped an instrument in a got a really nice line out of it. Great tip!

Some ppl hate any kind of positivity. Their life sucks so much that they get pissed at the thought of someone else simply enjoying themselves or life. Usually comes from the fact that their wife cheats on them; bullied in high school, not hugged enough as a child, not hugged at all as an adult, and most likely all of the above. Oh yeah and the erectile disfuntion doesn’t help either.

I'm a 48 yr old beat junkie fro Pz with a bunch of studio kit but I'm loathed to get a computer but recently I've been starting to realise I may not be doing myself or my music justice by not having one. You make ableton look easy which gives me hope as I'm worried if I get a computer my stress levels could take a severe battering. Your videos and music rock and you come across really well. You should set up a school of beats that people can actually attend.

Used to do it with the ole' Rex format. Import a Rex file in the Rex player of Reason, extract midi. Then I looked wich sounds were the same, ie if I had 4 kick slices I put the midi on one lane. Same for all the elements each their own place. Then I loaded the same Rex file in the nnxt sampler, and replaced the sounds there ie kick with another kick, snare with another snare etc.. Pro was that it retained the same groove, and I could use it without lawyers at my front door lol. But great tutorial Barry, guess this is the modern version of that technique :)
