The Thong Song has no business being as good as it is, but I regard it as a pinnacle of civilization, a contemporary wonder of the world. This song dropped when I was 11, and I didn't think much of it at the time. A man was singing about underwear on the radio, and my classmates thought it was the greatest thing. And they were right, but for reasons I would not grok until I was much older, until my ear had ripened to the point at which I could even *begin* to apprehend the transcendence of this track. The masterfully manipulated Eleanor Rigby sample taps deep into the pop collective unconscious, demanding your attention with its melodrama: oh yes, this is a thong song, but don't you *dare* dismiss it. The hook density of this record is unbelievable - every little melody and counterpoint lodges itself in the hippocampus like a bur. Between the chord stabs of his tight, complex vocal harmonies and his thick, soulful adlibs, SisQó leaves nothing on the table, leveraging a voice so versatile one nearly wonders if his proclamations of passion for panties could, indeed, be the overture to world peace. If your last inhibition doesn't jettison itself from your prefrontal cortex like a Mentos in a Diet Coke when the key changes at 3:16, check your pulse, because I'm afraid you may not have one. And that, I have read, is a medical emergency. This song is a triumph, a veritable masterpiece, and it's about thongs. It's like if Beethoven named the final movement of his 9th symphony "Ode to Ass."

This song takes me back as a kid growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Having a walkman, meeting your homies at the spot after school. Girls swinging by later because they knew where the guys would be at. Casual flirting, playing ball, roasting each other. All kinds of innocent shenanigans. Our parents saying be home by sun down. Who ever had candy or gum, that kid would end up giving it all to everyone. How I miss those times. So much more social than now, where you can reach everyone so quickly and yet feel so unattended.

This song-song-song-song-song was utterly IMPOSSIBLE to ignore in 2000. In the wake of the last huge hit to shake the airwaves ("Smooth" by Rob Thomas and Santana), here we were with another groove; a laid back production, hyperactive synth line and and a crooning, wheezing vocal melody set the stage for one of the most comedic smash hits of all time. It DESERVED hit status. Not only was it clever as hell, it was brilliantly produced. There was no other song in 2000 to top it.
