Sissel Kyrkjebø performing "Solveigs Song" by Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen at a TV-concert in 1991, celebrating the inauguration of H.M. King Harald and H.M. Queen Sonja of Norway.
Sissel, the international singing sensation and national treasure of Norway, is established as one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos. Her angelic and powerful voice has made Sissel a national institution and she has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She has contributed haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, and has been performing duets with singers like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, Brian May, Neil Sedaka, Bryn Terfel and Russell Watson. In 2005, she was knighted by the King of Norway, as the youngest ever to receive this honour. And in 2006, her album 'The Spirit of the Season' with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir went to number-one on the Billboard Classical Charts, and received a Grammy nomination. A very remarkable voice that only comes once in our lifetime.

The best rendition of this piece, by far. It's almost ridiculous. Technical mastery aside, I've heard a lot of good versions, but Kyrkjebø _lives_ in the language and that makes all the difference. It feels personal in a way that is impossible for people who are phonetically trying to emulate the language to reproduce. ...and the sass. My God. A legendary performance.

She has an amazing ability to present the song as if she were Solveig singing prayerfully and wistfully for the prodigal Peer. She carries the fullness of the note/pitch without overpowering it with forte/fortissimo.I’ll have to re-read Ibsen’s rendition of the story, but as I recall, Solveig’s song is sung twice: when Peer leaves the village, and when he returns, with hope against expectation, and collapses in contrition and exhaustion onto Solveig’s lap. Solveig’s song is the key to interpreting Peer’s real identity and purpose despite his misguided adventures and misguided worldly successes (and excesses). I can almost see Solveig singing her song with soft, forgiving, unshakable grace as Peer falls asleep on her lap at the close of the story. Sissel’s presentation here seems to capture this masterful closure with such tranquility and assurance...

Our relatives brought us a cassette of Sissel’s first album, a collection of Christmas songs, in about 1985. I was in Norway in 1990-1991to study and serendipitously was able to catch her performing in Bergen. We also saw her near our home when she performed in Seattle in 2004. She is still quite young here and not at her peak but this is a breathtaking performance. In hindsight stunning, really, because she was already amazing but continued to diligently develop her voice and stage presence. What a treasure to see someone so gifted not take it for granted but work hard to improve.

The only day I attended assembly in our secondary school was Thursdays, when the deputy head would play classical music. This and Anitra's dance were my favourites and Peer Gynt was the first record that I bought (at 13) when dad bought a 'stereogram'

I do think Sissels clear voice fits the innocent character of Solveig much better. It also fits more the overall feel of the story and scenes, which take place in a northern village, not an urban opera house where people worked on their voices for years. She sounds very natural here.

One might say that Sissel's rendition is earthly perfection, while Marita's is heavenly perfection. Both are excellent, and one's taste will dictate their preference.

Beautiful performance from a beautiful woman. Is she better than Marita Solberg? I don't know, and I don't care: they've both brought happiness to my heart in equal measures, and I thank them equally.

I find the version of Kirsten Flagstad also a very beautiful one. It sounds very easy as well. Only the record is not the best - it is from 1929. Marita Solberg sings it in my opinion a little too hard. Sissel sings it really crystalclear - even the notes on the top, which is the absolutely hardest part. At the version of Sissel you can easily hear every single note which is a sign of quality. But whoever sings this song - it is a very very hard one.

Dear friend Sue. It is the lyrics. Please, enjoy the beautiful poem. Solveig's Song Perhaps there will go both winter and spring, And next summer also and the whole year, But onetime you will come, I know this for sure, And I shall surely wait for I promised that last. God strengthen you where you go in the world, God give you joy if you before his footstool stand, Here shall I wait until you come again, And if you wait above, we'll meet there again, my friend! lyricstranslate.com/en/solvejgs-song-solveigs-song.html

The Japanese Emperor, Naruhito, loves Soloveig's Song so much. When he was a crown prince, he studied at the Oxford. On the way back to Japan, he dropped in Norway to visit Grieg's house in Bergen. I believe a soprano singer should have sung the song for him, and it should be an unforgettable day for him.
