You might already know this, but just in case you are too young to have ever heard this on your radio rock stations, this was not written as a religious song. It was a 60’s romantic song that was first a beautiful instrumental and gradually, with lyrics, became a 60’s rock & roll hit. This movie then very cleverly morphed it into an “I love Jesus” song as it also did with the song ”Leader of the Pack”. So it is real understandable that you would love the song. It was always an extremely popular tune. That aside, I share your wishes about what religion ought to be, but there has always been an ugly “power to influence and control” vibe operating beneath the surface of almost all of the world’s religions since the beginning of time. The wars and arguments are about power in the exact same way that politics are.
