Ranni (the woman with the chainsaw) was one of the chembarons from season 1. You can see her in the montage at the start of this episode as the third character that disappears from the table (after Ren and Silco died in S1)

Piltover is a sovereign city-state, like Athens or Venice were in real life, built on trade and run by wealthy aristocratic houses and lead by a council of city elites. The Undercity is just a name for the city of Piltover's poor residential areas and slums where most of the cities laborers live. Topside exploits Undercity as a source for cheap labor in the cities underground mines and factories, giving them the bare minimum to survive. Essentially wage slavery. Undercity declaring independence as its own sovereign nation of Zaun would threaten the status quo that Topside relies on to generate its wealth. It'd be like the factory districts and slums of 19th century London declaring independence from the rest of the city.

Originally the 2 cities were actually distinct entities, but when most of Zaun literally collapsed into the fissures Piltover claimed defacto control because it was total chaos.

Venice was never really just a city state, it started as a collection of coastal and island communities over a wide area, made up of refugees in the Roman Empire, it then formed a duchy. It took hundreds of years to form the city of Venice where we now think of it, originally the capital was in another city. It became autonomous because the Western Empire collapsed and it was considered part of the Eastern Empire, the Eastern Empire officially bestowed titles on the elected doge. It was isolated enough that that was essentially ceremony, and they were given a tax exemption status in exchange for helping against a Norman invasion. By that time it already owned several other possessions down the Dalmatian coast, such that the Doge of Venice considered themself the Duke of Dalmatia as well and it would continue to grow, largely at the expense of it's suzerain overland by taking Greek territories and most of the Greek islands. Athens on the other hand was a city state, but unlike most other Greek city states it did something similar to Venice and created a sort of naval empire for itself over various islands and other Greek city states. When Sparta decided to expand their power they did so by exerting influence in a League of Greek city-states, and when Spartans created colonies, notably Taranto in Magna Graecia (southern Italy, between the toes and heel of the boot) they were independent. Buncha other Italian city states that would be good examples like Milan at certain periods. Genoa and Pisa, like Venice, did form colonies and own coastal properties, as far away as Crimea. It's why the three are usually called merchant republics and not city-states, although the name of the states was the same as the capital city which was central for alotta administration.

Piltover is rich because they are the main trade route for other nations. The under city(aka Zaun) isn’t actually fully underground as you can see sunlight and moon in some scenes, it’s still part of Piltover which is why it’s called the under city because it’s just beneath the main city in like a canyon under a cloud of smog and pollution from exposed piping and the undercity’s factories. Silco made a reference to the name Zaun when in the end of last season he asked Jayce for independence from Piltover and for the undercity to be referred to as Zaun. There was war in the beginning of season 1 because they tried at independence from the top siders before as well since they were angry with how the topsiders ran them, because they essentially live in two total different worlds pretty much. Which is why silco killed Vander because he wanted control of the undercity to fight for independence again and Vander was keeping them from that because as previously mentioned Vander tried before where he failed and lots of people were killed including vi and powders parents(the opening scene of season 1).

Remember for most of history, you only had Cities. Rome was a city with an Empire. Citizenship was not extended to the empire as a whole until, perhaps disastrously, 212 ad. Minute 25:00 The new thinking about “countries” isn’t very old. The difference is quite profound, because it relates to a people’s narrative, identity & beliefs as well as formalized structures of governance, citizenship, religion, and other social habits.

You are really not paying attention at all xD Chainsaw Lady was a Chembaron and had enough ressources todo the attack. The Massaker at the start of Season 1 was, according to Vander in Season 1, the result of the Undercity rising up in a revolt. That's why he was pushing Vi to not go down that path (Cross that Bridge) like he did.

That's not exactly accurate about chemical weapons being inherently warcrimes, and white phosphorus still sees widespread use without being considered a warcrime. It depends on what the target it. Smoke grenades and pepper bombs can be considered as much was crimes as mustard gas, Churchill had problems trying to gas Iraqis with either (he did try to argue that some kind of tear gas would be more human than shooting them) from bombers in the interwar period. Regardless tho, warcrime laws generally require the countries to have been signatories to whatever agreement was made, and do not apply to private citizens, only to the soldiers of those governments. Sadly, like international law, it doesn't really mean anything because the laws can be made subjective by who decides to prosecute and against whom. Try applying international laws against American soldiers, American Service-Members' Protections Act is a thing, which gives the power to "liberate" American soldiers from the ICJ (thus the informal name, The Hague Invasion Act).

Nerdy... my dude. Saying the world is not complex is like saying that relations between Israel and Palestine are not complex. Zaun (The Undercity) is not "simple"... obviously it is run by a bunch of battling factions (the chembarons) trying to fill the power vacuum after Silco's death. This exactly what happens historically when a powerful leader dies. The result is often chaos and war among the remaining factions / led by generals or political leaders, or in this case mob bosses. Smeech and Sevika each have their own plays to try to create some level of cohesion with the chembarons / mob bosses. Piltover's politics have elements of being nearly as complex with lots of powerful houses, influential leaders (Sallow, Kiramen,) and then of course we have Queen Medarda... who we'll learn even more about in S2x3... so yeah, I'd say it is quite complex and comparable in many ways to the Israel vs. Palestine conflict -- even surrounding nations like Iran and the USA are heavily involved -- just like Noxus and whatever this Rose Witches clan is about ... there's a lot going on.
@VinniePaul91
@VinniePaul91 Ай бұрын
I don't think that's what they mean. The situation may be complex. But conceptually it's very simple world building. A rich merchant city exploiting the poverty in their underbelly. Got it. The situations and relations sprouting from that are complex, but they don't have to explain that because the viewer already understands how those dynamics work, what happens when you oppress people, how those people react, how rich aristocrats rule with conflicts of interest, that people are constantly vying for power and wealth, none of it needs to be explicitly explained. They can immediately get into the meat of the story because they don't need much world building for us to understand what's going on. It's very elegant world building, take a simple concept with a lot to tap from.

My problem with this season is that the showrunners are shotgunning through a lot of character development in two seasons (when they really needed to do this in three seasons). Like Vi met Vander 2.0 got drunk with him, went to the memorial and teamed up, Jayce then created bespoke hex tech weapons for the shock squad, and they burst in on the council with a plan of attack all within… 24 hours. That’s a bit much. And when you compare the character development at this point in S1 vs S2 we had a character like Huck who we were introduced to, got to learn his personality, and an idea of his motivation. Whereas Vander 2.0 (or Loris as Heavy Spoilers said) is a big blank wall. Supposedly he is or was an enforcer but none of the enforcers even acknowledge his existence, he has no past,he’s barely more than an NPC.
