You "could" try put in 2 Gigs RAM inside that Toshiba Laptop and you could get Hiren's boot CD utility to wipe the hard drive clean without need to take out the hard drive.

You could have re-formatted the hard drive through disk utility in recovery mode on a mac. I have done it and it's not that hard.
