I saw him in Santa Fe that same month and year, at the Paolo Solari outside amphitheater. It had just turned dark, and all the stars were out. It was absolutely magical. I recall that the AP news had just issued a story about him, describing his long battle with depression. So, after he came on stage and the applause finally died down, he said, in a deadpan voice, "I know you're just trying to make me feel better". I also recall watching the backup singers' interactions with him, and thinking of one of the women in particular, "he boffed her". He did exude that animal magnetism... I believe that as soon as he finished that tour, he went to study for 5 years in a Buddhist monastery.

He is Orpheus. Even the gods and the muses must bow down. He lights a candle inside of each and every word and opens the door do a world that our hearts barely dared to dream exists. Leonard you did not die. You live within us now. Someday we will meet you on the other side and listen to Orpheus once more.

OMG! How beautiful is this concert with Ann Richards in the audience and Leonard Cohen singing his greatest song! Great people. Great moment in time. Thank you for posting this.

Same year Nanci Griffith did her Other Voices, Other Rooms tour and Ann Richards was in the audience and I think joined her for a song. It's difficult to think of Texas electing someone like that now. (Mind you: this song's about prostitutes, isn't it?)
