My son went to the Chapel with my sister, when he was 14. He emailed me later and said, "Mom, it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." I mean, a 14 year old teenaged boy, saying this? It's that remarkable.

I was there last year it's stunningly beautiful.You could spend all day looking at the paintings on the walls and ceiling. All the idiots taking pictures when they are explicitly told not to do so though is annoying why the hell can't people have simple respect for something they're lucky to get the chance to see in the first place.

Michaelangelo would have appreciated what they are doing. There has to be a limit to the number of people in the room, to protect that amazing Renaissance masterpiece on the ceiling and walls of the Sistine Chapel, otherwise they will have to carry out a more rigorous rethink. One of the prehistoric painted caves in France, now has a replica, because the real one is endangered. I hope that never happens in the distant future, for this Christian heritage treasure.

You know what these stories never tell you? Michaelangelo HATED this project. He hated working on it so bad he LITERALLY ran away. He ran from the town and the Popes police captured him, dragged him back, and FORCED him to finish what he never wanted to start in the first place. THAT is a very important part of his history, the works history, and the Churches SHAME for centuries of ABUSE and oppression and cruelty against their own.

This is correct. I heard they locked him in there with a load of women to keep him happy. He was very argumentative towards the church authorities, but they knew he was the best there was.

@@Andrew-rc3vh No, they did not do that. He had apprentice staff, but he'd have been much happier not being there at all. I'm letters he complained about the terrible neck pain he acquired from the physicality of laying upside down on scaffolding, and having to crawl up and down on it all day.
@Andrew-rc3vh8 ай бұрын
@@HerrPoopenstein I think you will find Vasari explain the women. They were beautiful young women and he very much had an eye for beauty, so he was a bit of a womaniser, like had a following. The church saw it as immoral, but figured what goes on behind closed doors can be forgotten about, for the sake of their art being done. He had a history of difficulty in getting him to finish what commissions he was given. Work would stop and start.
